Nolan ryan rookie question

I just noticed there is also a milton bradley version, they seem to book at the same price according to beckett, my question is one more desiralble than the other?

Thank you

Most people would rather have the basic Topps card since they're almost exactly the same (MBs have a shade different back color and some have the white stripe on the left side of the card). That's because more people are working on the basic Topps set than the Nolan Ryan rookie sets. Or you could check sold listings:
https://www.psacard.com/auctionprices/
Both are pretty hard to find centered, so if you want either or, go for the most centered one.

Thank you, I am focusing my collecting on vintage cards rather than sets, I found a MB version less expensive than the topps which is why I was asking

The MB cards are significantly more rare than the regular version, but, as mentioned previously, there is generally more demand for the regular version, thus the price difference you observed.

If you collect sets you need one of each :)

Thank you
Ended up getting the MB Ryan rookie PSA 4 for $200

if your not familiar with the MB version check out " Win the Card" game. That was the game that put out the cards.

Congrats on the pick up.

While some feel the MB cards are a separate set ( they are so listed in SCD), at least two of the MBs are officially listed as variations to the 1968 base set, Cox and Brinkman. In his article on MBs in SCD, Carlton has argued that all MBs, including the Ryan are variations to the main set ( I realize some have disagreed with that premise in prior threads). At this point I agree with others that the base Ryan gets more love, and most MBs in general end up being well handled cards in lesser condition since distributed with the game board. But if MBs get more recognition over time, either as a set or a variation, you could be glad you went the MB route

The Article states this
“Some regular cards have been misgraded by PSA as Milton Bradley cards, as they have mistaken a thin white cut line on two Ryan rookies. ”

This is my card, you can see the miscut white line, is the article stating this is actually a topps and not MB?

If your card is the one with cert ending 2703, then it is a Milton Bradley. PSA got it right. Good price.

swarmee 10-30-2018 04:31 PM

If yours is a PSA 4(MC), then most people would value it like a PSA 2 card. A qualifier normally drops the value (and registry ranking) by two spots.

swarmee 10-30-2018 04:34 PM

And no, yours is a Milton Bradley. The thin white line on some regular Topps cards still has the burlap border on the other side of the stripe. Yours is solid white from where it was next to the car card on the printing sheet.

See how the one that's a 4(mk) sold for about half the others?

Ive always been intrigued with oddball items and convinced myself the rarity made it a better option. Like everyone pointed out, its not always the case. Noticed the same type of thing with the 75 Topps Brett rc having the more rare mini and opc.
