New Magnum PI- Higgins Is A Lady!!

Why, why, why?

bobbyw8469 06-03-2018 01:33 PM

They did the same thing in the new Lost in Space. Where Dr. Zachary Smith is a lady. And no explanation for why one of the daughters is white and the other is black. These shows do a horrible job at casting.

It's all about inclusion and to leave nobody out or behind and appeal to the current generation.

Same thing happened in the Battlestar Galactica reboot, where Starbuck became a woman. Dirk Benedict was the original, and Katee Sackhoff was in the reboot.

When I read this, I assumed the original Higgins had a sex change. :D

They might incorporate that idea into the storyline Irv

Well, the best reason I can think of is that John Hillerman and Jonathan Harris would be IMPOSSIBLE acts to follow. They were beyond mere character actors in their respective shows, and in fact truly carried their show.

I've read about an 80s or 90s non-sports show with members of the Lost in Space cast present to sign autographs. "Everyone" wanted Jonathan Harris, and the others were "just there", which infuriated them.

I really love the original Magnum P.I., and immensely enjoy Tom Selleck as Magnum, but I'll tell ya this---without John Hillerman an episode dragged and was pretty much a dud. --- Brian Powell

I was pretty dang excited as a kid when Trammell and Whitaker guest starred on Magnum PI.

Maybe in this one Higgins is actually Robin Masters without a doubt

That was awesome!

- though I was no longer a kid myself.

The sacrilege lies not in casting a female Higgins, but in attempting to remake Magnum at all.

Something we have known for quite a while now....Hollywood is out of ideas. So they give classics a makeover for the new generation or try to catch lightening in a bottle with a new specific audience in mind. Oceans 8. Really? Danny Oceans daughter or granddaughter and her 7 female friends knock off a bank or casino? Ugh.

Yeah, I watched the 2016 Ghostbusters remake last week and just felt blah. I think all the actors were fine and some of the humor landed, but I just couldn't get past being annoyed at why they had to make this a Ghostbusters movie instead of using the cast to make something original.

The cameos of the original cast like Bill Murray just made me dislike it even more since they reminded me of how much I liked the original.

Well if i didnt know about the cast change, if i saw the new higgins i would say 'dude looks like a lady'

Total agree. Magnum, P.I. was/is one of my favorite shows. Never missed an episode on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. central time. Also a bonus that the show was followed by Simon and Simon, a good show in its on right.

I've followed the "saga" of Magnum over the past 20+ years; i.e. bring back as a continuation movie, new series, reimagined movie, etc. At one time, I believe that Tom Selleck tried to procure the rights for Magnum but was turned down. That would have been super cool.

The show still holds up well today. Not interested in "re-imagined" anything.

pawpawdiv9 06-08-2018 08:44 AM

I watched the original a few times...but I was more of a knight rider.
Wished they would took a new Camaro are re-boot it and had a big busted and short skirted woman driving it--say Pam Anderson, Heidi Klum or some other Angels.

ALR-bishop 06-08-2018 10:11 AM

The success of the "new" 2010 Hawaii Five 0, which I do not watch, likely made this inevitable at some point. If not for Blue Bloods maybe Selleck could have been Higgins.

pawpawdiv9 06-08-2018 12:55 PM

I do like watching Blue Bloods. but like NCIS stuff a bit more, especially New Orleans.
tho I like Jethro, Denozzo, & Goth girl.

PowderedH2O 06-17-2018 07:08 AM

As a Hawaii Five-O fan, I was extremely excited about the reboot. Then, I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes. Each one had McGarrett essentially saving the universe, and apparently he had an unlimited budget for gadgets. The original had the Five-O guys chasing down Hawaii criminals doing regular crimes like bank robberies and stuff. Oh well, another reason I watch ZERO current series on television.

Kinda like the Mission Impossible movies. The show was great. Now, Tom Cruise breaks multiple Olympic records on every film (high jump, long jump, etc). I skip them too.

Was and still am a huge fan of the show Magnum PI. Last I heard, Jay Hernandez was supposed to be the new Magnum. Seriously???

I know things have changed and Tom Selleck in his youth is no longer the look that is "in fashion" , but the guy was THE MAN in the 80s. I don't see Hernandez as THE MAN, ever.

I had always hoped they would do a remake or a continuation when all of the main players were still alive and of an age where it would be believable. They just waited too long. Too many of the good supporting characters have died as well.

I will watch a new Magnum if it finally gets released, but have a hard time thinking I can accept anything but the original.

They will return as Mr. Trammell and Mrs. Whitaker........

or Mr. Whitaker and Mrs. Trammell.

This will then set up the sequel

"Fielder's Choice - Sex Change at Second Base"

just the two photos above sum up what I worry about as the possible difference. Humor vs a lack thereof.
