Why is there no talk or card posting of Joe DiMaggio?
I can't recall seeing any cards or anything.
|
What cards does he have for the Post War forum? Off the top of my head, his 1949 Leaf and 1952 Berk Ross. 1953 Bowman Color wrappers/box? His Salutations Exhibit is credited as 1939-1946, so that could fall into either side. He doesn't have many contemporary cards at all, compared to most superstars in the games history
EDIT: He's in 1961 Baseball Scoops too. 1961 Golden Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame postcards that have been issued for many many years. |

I posted this in another thread today. A 1940s RPPC (Mexican) of Joltin' Joe..

DiMaggio is in the front row, fourth from left, in the 1970 Topps #631 Oakland A's team picture card.

Yeah, there are some baseball greats who hardly get mentioned on this forum. It looks like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente get all the love.

Maybe a lot of sports fans became disillusioned when Kramer revealed that the Clipper dunks.;)

He was not a nice man and there doesn't seem to be a lot of collector warm fuzzies about him, which is a shame since he is a first tier HOFer.

He definitely comes up from time to time, but perhaps not as often as he should. My personal favorite card of his is the 41 play ball. But I wouldn't mind adding a 36 goudey or his zeenut to my collection. I haven't gotten around to adding any of them, but do own a signed baseball. I believe I posted a picture in the auto pickup thread at the time.
|
Thanks for all of the pictures and info. It is nice to see such a forgotten about player getting our attention for a bit.

I love Joe D., and it definitely (and unfortunately) helps me pick up stuff for my collection because you guys are right; he just doesn't get the love. Last month, I picked up a game used bat, so that is my DiMaggio pinnacle right now. |
Anyone that married Marilyn Monroe is a Hall of Famer in my book. :D

I would put up a picture of it, but I'm new to the forum here. Could somebody tell me how to upload a pic? I also have a 1939 Play Ball, Joe DiMaggio... |

Ok, I will have to take the pic. I guess you are talking about the one that says "insert link", because the other paper clip says "remove link". So, I will try this a little later, for sure. I'll put up the 39 Play ball too. And thanks! |

Well, I've got to figure out how to rotate this pic! But here's the front of the Joe DiMaggio Bowery card...

There's got to be a simpler way anyway. If I'm taking the pic from my camera, how would I transfer it here? I'm a bit challenged when it comes to this whole 21st century technology thing. If you can give me any more pointers, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks - Gannon |

I am not very tech savvy myself. I know there are other ways but I take a pic with my phone and email it to myself and save it to my computer. I have posted directly from my phone but it is a PIA with the small screen. |

I've posted this before, but it's always worth seeing again for a laugh. This 'autographed' Dimag biography was given to my Dad, who (a long time ago) gave it to me. In looking at it again for the first time in many years, I realized there was no way in heck that Joltin' Joe signed it. Plus, I believe it came out in 2000, the year AFTER he died. And why would someone forging a signature include a mention of Jackie Gleason and Art Carney in the inscription?? Huh?? Wish I had some sort of time machine that would allow me to see who actually signed this tome and why...
Attachment 379930 And here is a sign adorning the building out here that now occupies the site of (next door to?) Joe D's birthplace... Attachment 379931 |

If you are asking about an actual camera - you know - the ancient 20th century type device, if it is relatively new, it should have the capability of saving images on a micro card/disk, which you then unplug and insert into the same type of slot on your computer and view it with any simple photo or graphics program that is resident on your computer. Then manipulate it, rotate it or whatever, save it and upload it here. On the other hand, if you are asking about a camera/phone, sorry, I can't suggest anything, as I'm also stuck in the last century as far as that goes.:o |
Why is there no talk or card posting of Joe DiMaggio?
I would agree that Joe D has slipped a bit in popularity from when I first learned about baseball in the 1980’s. Based on what I heard of him as a kid, I would have probably told you he was one of the top 5 players ever, or something like that. I wonder how much of that was due to his insistence on being introduced as the “greatest living ball player” anytime he did anything public?

At any rate, I wanted to post some pics of these matches that my Father picked up for me at Joe DiMaggio's restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco almost 50 years ago. They're really nice. |

I'm a DiMaggio collector. Truthfully, I collect just about anything that catches my attention but, over time, DiMaggio items have come on board more often than any other so I figured out I must be a "DiMaggio collector."
This just arrived a couple days ago...DiMaggio rounding 3rd after a homer in '47. Frank Crosetti is coaching 3rd. I watched Mr. DiMaggio in public on just one occasion. He seemed businesslike, somewhat tight-lipped and, perhaps, a bit surly. My father met him in Las Vegas in the mid 60's. He called it the most "unbelievable encounter with any type of celebrity he ever had". He said that DiMaggio was in a great mood and even posed for a couple of pictures with folks who appeared to know him. He was expecting a very prim and proper man and said DiMaggio used language he would have never imagined. I had an opportunity to meet and speak with Dom DiMaggio at the Italian American Sports HOF when I was a teen. He was as kind a person as I ever met in my life. |
Very nice photo there. Looks like it might be a spring training game in Arizona or southern California. DiMaggio was an enigmatic figure that few people - even those close to him - understood well. Interesting that his brother Dom was so very different in personality, yet they were both fine athletes in their time.

When DiMaggio was voted the greatest living player, he had only been retired for about 18 years. Those involved in that vote knew very well who he was. Of course, that title, is completely subjective, as there were many other great players. Add onto that, that players for the Negro Leagues weren't even considered. |

Interesting to note, while playing in a monstrous sized park (400 to the line and 475 to the alley in his prime--forget CF) DiMaggio had more HR than strikeouts until the final 2 months of his career in '51. In addition, he not only holds the ML record for hitting in 56 straight games (73 of 74) he also holds the PROFESSIONAL record of 61 straight in the PCL. He was...pretty good. |
I want to thank everyone for all of the pictures and stories!
Growing up as a baseball and baseball card fanatic in the 70s and early 80s, I always liked Joe D. He was still doing commercials all of the time. I also read many books about all of the Yankees of his time. And then I find myself in 7th grade Science class with a girl named DiMaggio. I had to ask, and she ended up being a close relative and a couple of weeks later brought me an autographed ball. |

I enjoyed this book. His foot doctor wrote it sharing his memories of his time with Joe. I plan to take this book with me the next time I visit NYC and maybe dine at some of the places mentioned.

I don't agree with the comment...."He was not a nice man". July 17, 1982, I met Joe DiMaggio at a Baseball card show in Freehold, NJ. I started the conversation with.... " Today, 41 years ago in Cleveland, your amazing 56-game hitting streak ended ". Joe paused a moment and replied....." You know what, you are right. How did you know that ? " I told him....." I did my homework. Furthermore, I do not believe your hitting streak will ever be surpassed. " I was the last one in line to get Joe's autograph, and he was very gracious to spend about 20 minutes talking with me. With me being an avid Yankees fan (with a lot of fond memories to share with Joe) made for a very enjoyable conversation. Joe DiMaggio was a very conservative guy, who also valued his privacy. And this may have been misconstrued by some who thought he was not a friendly guy. 1941 Wirephoto http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...oeDomDiMag.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Well, now there is a lot of talk around Joe DiMaggio!
