Longest time between two cards of same player in Topps era?

Collector Don Sherman recently pointed out that Brock Davis appeared as a Rookie Star in 1963 Topps and then disappeared from their sets until 1971.

An 8-year gap's pretty big, but I suspect it's not the record. Other than player-to-manager absences like Tom Lasorda or Sparky Anderson and infamous signing issues like Maury Wills, what active players spent several years between cards? Is there one we can consider this "record holder?"

Maury Wills was in the background of a 1958 topps card sliding into second? he didn't appear on another topps card until 1967?

Rich Klein 09-25-2013 01:22 PM

It was

a 1960 WS Card

Spike 09-25-2013 03:35 PM

Right, 1960 Topps #389 shows an unnamed Wills fielding a throw on the "Luis Swipes Base" World Series card and then doesn't appear on a Topps card until 1967 as a Pirate. Brock Davis is the first I've heard of having a longer gap. (Maury did appear in the 1960s Post Cereal sets and 1963 Fleer in-between, but no Topps.)

As a player, Minnie Minoso. He finished up with a 1964 card and was next on a record breaker card in 1977 for being the oldest player due to an appearance in 1976.

Gr8Beldini 09-26-2013 11:16 AM

I don't count the Minoso, as his 1977 was a "special" not a regular card. Going crazy to top Brock Davis (I need to get a life). Can't do it yet. Came close with Wally Wolf and Paul Ratliff 1963/1970. Wally Wolf being interesting because it was the same (crude) photo both years. Makes me wonder if 7 years is the Topps record for gap using the same picture.

Back in the Day

Someone did a great story for Baseball Hobby News about all the recycled 1969 Topps photos. Be nice to see that story again

1969

I think in mid 1969 Topps reached a new agreement with the Players Association and it's new head Marvin Miller. An agreement much more favorable to the players. The result was new pictures started to show up in the latter series of cards, but at least the first 4 or 5 series had many recycled pictures. Expansion teams also had an impact that year. I think Olberman may have also done an article on 69 photos

Jack Quinn comes in mind who has a T card and a 33 Goudy but there are probably other cards in between.

I disagree. It was issued as part of the regular series and you need it to have a complete set.

Rich Klein 09-30-2013 10:30 AM

Well in that case

Bob Keegan is even more out there then Minnie Minoso in the 1977 set with the highlight of his no-hitter of 1957/ Still based on playing career.

SMPEP 09-30-2013 02:56 PM

I gotta go with Adam on that one

The Keegan is a card in a set describing a past deed.

The Minoso is a card describing a current deed, and the player in question, played in all of the intervening years.

How about the 1976 Topps Honus Wagner card? Must be 50+ years between.

Chris Counts 10-01-2013 11:08 PM

Dick Hall, who was a pretty good pitcher, disappeared from Topps cards in '64, 65 and '66 ...

Harliduck 10-02-2013 10:21 AM

These two have always stuck out for me -

Tony LaRussa - 64, 68, 72

On that card every 4 years plan...

Lou Pinella - 64, 68, 69

All Future Star Rookie Cards...with the same picture...no respect..lol

ALR-bishop 10-02-2013 11:39 AM

Pinella

Same picture with 3 different teams

Roberto Clemente appeared in 1973 topps and not again until 1987 topps
14 years apart.

Gr8Beldini 10-03-2013 10:41 AM

I think I found a legit regular issue card that tied Brock Davis' 8 year gap... Vicente Romo; 1975 Topps set, then disappeared until 1983 topps. Bam!

Gaps

All you folks get due diligence stars as far as I'm concerned

Utter Chaos 02-04-2014 11:25 PM

Another one that is close:

Danny Murphy appeared on Topps cards in 1961, 1962, and 1963 as an outfielder for the Cubs. He disappeared until 1970 when he resurfaced as a pitcher for the White Sox.
