Lajoie family reunion

All of my Lajoies were under one roof last night for a rare reunion, so I decided to take a group photo. Thought it was worth sharing. Also, this seems like a good place to thank all of you who have helped me over the years put together this assortment.

Great cards...

...do you have anything signed by him?

canjond 05-08-2009 12:59 PM

Rob - whenever I visit my grandmother in Daytona Beach, FL, I always visit the cemetary in which my granfather is buried. My grandmother always told me that a baseball player is buried nearby. So, a few years back, I had her show me the baseball player that is near my grandfather. Turned out to be Nap!

Rob -

Great display. Thought you might enjoy seeing this - I know it's not as good as the real thing, but here is a scan of a 1906 spring training photo that you probably haven't seen. It came from the Eels family.

Boomer 05-08-2009 01:18 PM

Very impressive. Congratulations. Now, how do you pronounce his name?

sbfinley 05-08-2009 01:18 PM

That is a spectacular collection. Looks amazing.

sando69 05-08-2009 01:29 PM

quite the admirable assembly of naps!

boomer-
start with the word "azure"...
add an "L" before the accented first syllable, & replace the "re" with the word "way"...
or, Lazjuwey
hope this is helpful!

bijoem 05-08-2009 01:36 PM

What an awesome collection! (and I see a familiar one or two :()

The photo of the collection is missing something though.... you need another big one to balance it out better....

Lajoie (and others) Song

Who lost at the battle of ole Waterloo?
I don't know, I don't know
Some say 'twas Na-po-le-on
Maybe it's true
Maybe so, I don't know
The pink sheets don't print
Mr. Bonaparte's face
No stories about him today
Cuz he never could hold down
That old second base
Like his namesake big Nap La-jo-ie!

Merrillstoys 05-08-2009 01:48 PM

I can't wait to tell my friend Brew, about this post.
He's the great, great, great, nephew of Nap.

Hey Mark,
My friends name sounds like WHAT without the T at the end of his name

Doug 05-08-2009 02:19 PM

Great stuff, thanks for posting it!

sando69 05-08-2009 02:23 PM

merrill-
is it "whu" as in (the way i say) what, or "wha" as in doo-wa-diddy?
i would think that the latter would be THE correct french or canandian pronunciation, which would also require accenting the final syllable, as well... (Lazjwah).
i'd assume that the americanized version (Lazjuwey) is such because of the way american language treats "ie" as a suffix

T206Collector 05-08-2009 02:38 PM

I believe...

...its is La-zhu-way.

I also believe you can actually hear him announced and speak during the 1939 Hall of Fame opening on the following CD:

Merrillstoys 05-08-2009 02:38 PM

Hey Guys,
It's like doo-wa-diddy
Only if you come from the Bronx like I do, you might think
it sound like wut.

sporteq 05-08-2009 03:08 PM

wow.... very nice collection lovin the rppc!

Jacklitsch 05-08-2009 03:10 PM

Great cowabunga!!! What an array!!

If it's "La-zhu-way" that ok for him.

But as above stated the French Canadian pronunciation is Lazjwah with an emphasis on the wah.

Then ther are those who say its Lajoey with emphasis on the joey.

Me, I usually say Lazjwah. But thats just me.

Rob D. 05-08-2009 03:22 PM

Thanks for all of the nice words.

Paul,

I have his autograph on an Old-Timers Day program from the 1930s but not on any cards. I've never been an autograph guy but probably will pick up a signed HOF plaque one of these days. It's just never been a priority for me.

Mark,

Thanks for the scan of the 1906 spring-training photo. I had not seen it.

Hands down, my favorite photo of Lajoie is one that pictures him in street clothes with his long-haired dachshund. One of my favorite players with my absolute favorite breed of dog. Tough to beat that.

Joe,

I do not know who will come after you first: me or Lichtman.

As for the pronounciation, I've always gone with La-zhu-way, and when I hear most media types (I know, not the best litmus test, not by a long shot) and folks in Cleveland pronounce it, that's the way they say it.

White Borders 05-08-2009 03:50 PM

Lineup for Yesterday

L is for Lajoie
Whom Clevelanders love,
Napolean himself,
With glue in his glove.

Nice going !

Adam 05-08-2009 04:02 PM

Wow!! How cool!

slidekellyslide 05-08-2009 04:04 PM

There's something very satisfying about seeing a group of cards together like that. Thanks for sharing Rob.

Bicem 05-08-2009 04:24 PM

damn, that's nice!

Kawika 05-08-2009 05:40 PM

Very impressive array of Lajoies. There was a "Show me your Lajoie" thread on the old board about six months ago (http://tinyurl.com/ocxqdl) in which I posted a YouTube link of a 1930 radio interview with Ty Cobb in which he expounded on the subjects of base stealing, keeping your eye on the ball and Lajaway. It's about a 90 second clip; you can hear The Man enunciate Lajoie easy pie about ten seconds from the end.

David, great card and great link. Watching that kind of made me feel nauseous thinking about Manny and the modern game.

chiprop 05-08-2009 06:30 PM

The Rose Co. found an ideal home. That is a great collection. Congrats

Bill Stone 05-08-2009 06:36 PM

Rob --fantastic ---which was the 1st? the most recent?

Rob D. 05-08-2009 07:13 PM

Bill,

I owned some Lajoies back in the day, then sold them when I soured on cards. When I started to assemble this group a couple decades later, I think the first was the orange border. The most recent is near dead heat between the W600 and the Rose postcard.

I should add that these are all cards the picture him with Cleveland. I consider the Lajoie/Philadelphia combination to be a bit sacreligious and won't be adding any of them to the "family."

drdduet 05-08-2009 07:15 PM

Beautiful collection Rob. Very impressive and Thank You for sharing.

ksfarmboy 05-08-2009 07:19 PM

Sweet cards Rob. I especially like the postcard issues. Thanks for letting us look.

That spring training photo is off the charts. Great scan too. The clarity of that photo is remarkable.

Rob,

I don't fear Jeff - I am safe.
The only time he will visit me in Staten Island is when I become a client.

So my money is on you knocking on my door first.

Rob,
The Verrazano Bridge or the Ferry?

tothrk 05-09-2009 08:05 PM

Nice

i'm new to vintage (pre goudey & diamond stars anyway) and new to the forum. "I'm always in need of a Nap" Now I get it. Nice collection. What is the card two cards down from the cracker jack? The one with the pastel greenish background?

Rob D. 05-10-2009 10:01 AM

That's an E98 Anonymous "Set of 30" 1910 caramel card. It's from the same set as the three directly to the right of it, only with a different background (green, orange, red, blue).

tothrk 05-10-2009 11:02 AM

E98

Thank You. I noticed the three next to it but the green one really caught my eye.
