NEWLY Discovered Tobacco Card FInd Brunswick Maryland

How about something nice and positive to lighten up the boards a bit?? Pop and I went to this 422 card tobacco find that was actually discovered about 20 years ago but has stayed in the family as they were not ready to sell back then. This is a great find because I even left with a picture of the gentleman who actually pulled these from the packs in 1910 and 1911 !! He was born in 1898 and must have started smoking at the ripe age of 13.

The collection consists of all Piedmont backs and all T205's and T206's. There was nothing rare but had a nice percentage of Hall of Famers. Now for the real nice part and see the pictures below. Not all but MANY of these puppies were removed from their packs and not touched since! There are some blazers here folks. If I didn't have the provenance I wouldn't have believed these weren't trimmed.

Pop gets all of the credit for the initial find many years ago and for staying in contact with the family over the years and coming along today and allowing me to buy him lunch. He had a $6 per diem today.

The T205 Richie is the only non-Piedmont and is a Green Broadleaf.

WOW! the rush of a fresh to the hobby find is a feeling I can't describe. But it is a feeling that I am going to take the liberty of wishing on all of you fellow collectors. Dan Mckee.

Doug 05-09-2009 08:14 PM

Amazing cards!

soxinseven 05-09-2009 08:15 PM

Congratulations on a truly great find. I think the coolest part of the find may be the provenance that comes with it! Congrats again Steve

danmckee 05-09-2009 08:16 PM

I am banned from submitting to PSA. See past T206 Magie threads where I sued PSA and Joe called me and whispered pleasantries in my ear.

There is absolutely nothing like making a fresh discovery (even though you knew about these for some time). One of the few things in life that really gets the juices flowing.

Holy crap those are nice. I love digging around a old house only to open a box and discover something that has been hidden for years.

I really really really am extrememyl jealous of both the amazing cards but also of the insance rush you must of hand when you saw and handled these cards.

Amazing stuff and thanks for the post.

"The T205 Richie is the only non-Piedmont and is a Green Broadleaf."

They must of been out of Piedmonts at the 7-11 that day! Great find Dan and Dad. Congrats!

toppcat 05-09-2009 11:35 PM

The colors are just superb!

barrysloate 05-10-2009 04:49 AM

martin neal 05-10-2009 04:54 AM

Congrats, Dan

There's not much that is more fun than that. Well, maybe a few things. Can't wait to see them at the Philly show.

Congratulations to the team ... you, and your dad. :)

Exhibitman 05-10-2009 07:33 AM

Wow

I had a smaller find a few years ago; it is a total rush! Congrats!

danmckee 05-10-2009 07:55 AM

I was told by the family that they were kept in a small box until just before Pop visited them years ago. The family had gone to see Jack Byrd in Gaitherburg and purchased T sleeves where they remain as we speak.

Another neat tidbit was that they still had our modest business card that dad had made up for us way back then, D & D Sports and our old home phone on it. That was neat to see as well.

All of the cards don't look like these unfortunately. There are many nice one but some have a small penciled number on the front which is just a grade killer.

Thanks to all for the kind words and yes, being able to do this with pop was really special!

Dan

Hi Dan,
Nice..... I love finds.... There is nothing better than going through 400-500 "new" cards from the original owner. You get to see the slight differences in cuts and sizes that most collectors never get to see...
Be well Brian

PS Being able to spend quality time with Dad, doing what you both enjoy is priceless..... What a nice early Father's Day present...:D

Al C.risafulli 05-10-2009 08:44 PM

Thanks for all of the kind words fellow collectors. I will have this collection including a picture of the gent who smoked the Piedmont cigs at the National Wed through Friday for people to see it just as I got it. I think it is neat to see an original grouping from a single owner that pulled them from the packs. Dan.

WWGjohn 05-14-2009 02:45 PM

My O My!!

Dan,

That's a sweet batch of cardboard you got there. Thanks for sharing with us. Glad these puppies won't be locked away in plastic.
