June Pickup Thread

Just got this nifty pinback off of ebay. The "Murphy Did It" team of Omaha, NE...the picture is out of a book on Omaha baseball...I once bid on the postcard but got outsniped for it...have never seen another since.

Dan was Murphy's some type of automaker/dealership or was it just the name of the team? Neat little pickup.

I got this 1919 panorama of the Ft. Leavenworth 49th infantry teams. Pretty long panorama at 42".

Nice one Dan! I'm not sure why a town of maybe just a few hundred would have a baseball association but they are very near a few towns that did have minor league clubs.

Clint, Murphy's started out making wagons and then moved to automobiles in the early 1900s. Sweet yardlong there btw. and nice pin Andy.

ksfarmboy 05-31-2009 02:51 PM

Thanks Dan. That was a complete guess on the automobile part. It just looked like some similiar automotive pins I've seen in the past.

Hi-
I acquired the two pieces scanned below last month, but I did not scan them until recently, so I am counting these as June pickups. Thanks to BigFish (Toby) for the cabinet card! The picture of the Wesley team (most likely from Wesley Maine) was an antique show find. I love the puffy pants in the cabinet photo as well as the possible identification on the back (Churchill, not a known ballplayer, but I still like having a name to go with a photo). With the Wesley team photo, I was drawn to the knob on one of the bats as well as the catcher's mask on the ground.

I don't post much over on this side, but I'm quite happy with some old Life magazines that I purchased at a yard sale the other day. The time honored gentleman had 3 stacks of Life magazines dating from 1957 to 1967. I took my time and searched each magazine looking for sports articles. I ended up buying close to a dozen. The nice man drove a hard bargain, asking me for a dollar for each magazine and three dollars for the one issue with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Thought that I might share this story. I will post half of a scan since the magazines were so large in those days that they won't all fit on my scanner.

Hi everyone. Im new to the forum, and this stuff is awesome. I am a semi collector, but due to finances, of not a lot, but LOVE the old memorabilia and stuff. Some really cool finds in this thread, esp the Negro league Postcard.

MGHPro 06-03-2009 03:19 PM

I'm sure many of you saw this on ebay, but I'm happy to add this one to the collection.

I just got this from the UPS man here at work a little bit ago...it doesn't fit on my scanner (which is why it's blurry) so that's the best I can do without a camera...the photo is actually a cabinet photo. This also came with a scrapbook of the team from a young gal that followed them from the first day of the season to the last and cut out every single article from the newspaper.

I can't wait to get home because my wife called and said a package has arrived. I'll take photos and show that item tonight.

ksfarmboy 06-03-2009 04:20 PM

Dan, very cool WL item. Show us the book when you get a chance too.

These were waiting for me when I got home....they were sold in a lot, but I really only wanted the Nebraska State League sealed baseball. The rest are up for trade if someone has any Nebraska related memorabilia or cards.

the rest are
Florida State League (Sealed), Eastern League (Sealed), Northwest League, Northern League, and Sophomore League.

Dan,

Send them in to Coach's Corner. I'm pretty sure they have some "big" signings scheduled.

Nice Clint....how many O's jerseys do you have now?

ksfarmboy 06-04-2009 06:59 PM

Thanks Dan. This is my 9th knit and I have one flannel too. I bought this about 2 months ago and it took shipping it twice through the post office and once through UPS to get it. It was worth the wait though.

I know this is really far from baseball but it's my only june pickup so far, it's still vintage though. It's a 1943 Smith-Corona 03-A3, 30-06, most likey used in WW2.

slidekellyslide 06-05-2009 03:12 PM

Smith-Corona made rifles? Was this during the war years only?

yanks12025 06-05-2009 03:22 PM

Dan,
When the war came around the government had them start making rifles. They went from typewriters to military rifles then switched back after the war.

Carlton, do you have any information on Frederic Stanley??? It didn't even dawn on me about other works that he had done (including Coca Cola). My dad and I own this ORIGINAL painting by Mr. Stanley (assuming he's the same Frederic with a "c") that was done in 1913 for the James Hanley Brewing Company. Back in the thirties, the painting was actually insured by LLoyds of London by the brewery.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Greg

Edited to ad that I wonder if this is the same artist. Born in 1892 would have made him 21 when he did the painting. Not impossible, but...

FINALLY got something new worthwhile posting. Picked this up at the Shriner's Show in Wilmington yesterday from Phil Castinetti at SportsWorld.

and love that Rochester minor league stuff.

Looks like June has been good to everyone.

Outstanding additions Greg. It's nice to see you back in action. I know you are torn between the brew and baseball collection, but keep fair balance will ya?...ha ha.

HiNeighbor 06-08-2009 11:07 AM

Hey Guys,

Glad to have finally posted something. It's been tough, Mike, real tough finding sports over the beer. :D
Anything I've seen lately for the Sox has been either not to my liking, or way too expensive. It was nice to pick up the '04 scorecard.

Carlton,

Any chance of posting a close-up of the artist's signature on that piece?
I would love to compare it. From what I can see on your scan, it looks pretty darn close to that on my dog (also known as "The Watchdog of Quality").

Thanks again,
Greg

Greg, That's a great painting, probably one of the best bull dog paintings extant. Reminds me of a bull dog poster I have that may be my favorite non-sport poster ever though it's a bit beat up, see below. Don't know a whole lot about Frederic Stanely off hand. Below a shot of the signature on the poster, plus another non sport poster I have that he did.

HiNeighbor 06-09-2009 09:40 AM

Thanks for posting those pics Carlton. Love your dog as well. I'll have to check the signature when I get home. Seems a little different, but it could be a timeline thing.

The Hanley Brewery used this Bulldog on much of it's advertising in the thirties and forties. I have a ton of stuff showing the bulldog, which in one way is sort of bad because I kind of get tired of seeing so much of it all over my room :D

You can see him and all his puppies at our website

www.rhodeislandbreweryhistory.com

just go to the Hanley section

All the best,
Greg

CarltonHendricks 06-09-2009 11:22 AM

Bull Dog

Greg, You're welcome...just from eyeballing it, I'd be surprised if it's not the same artist...Is that painting the center piece of your Hanley collection? That illustration at the bottom the Hanley page of the puppy in front of the painting saying "That's my pop" is quite something...that would be your painting I assume....great website you have... I like the music intro...if it the same artist, please post a photo of the signature.

HiNeighbor 06-10-2009 06:23 AM

Carlton,

Will get a photo of the signature, hopefully tonight. I've been swamped with meetings this week at night and have only been home to sleep.

Yes, that painting in the puppy print is our painting. Although the painting is pretty cool, it's not really the center of our Hanley pieces. The best Hanley piece in our collection is the round reversed glass sign with the silver lettering and original frame c. 1900. That is hand painted and just a killer piece of advertising in it's own right. Then again, picking and choosing what piece is your best piece is kind of like saying you have one favorite child out of many.

All the best,
Greg

Isn't the last one "Revere"?
