PSA Quick Opinion
 

Occassionally I locate items on eBay or other under-the-radar sites that aren't authenticated and have considered using the PSA Quick Opinion. But, I was thinking, what would stop this mystery authenticator from buying or bidding against the person submitting the Quick Opinion? Is there any oversight to this venture? A lot of times finding good stuff is a lot of work, and to think that maybe the person you're asking to authenticate the item could now benefit from the efforts is a bit upsetting.

Just ranting.

If this is allowable, I would wait until I won the item to get the quick opinion. If it's likely genuine, I have the quick opinion documentation and if it's not I can probably back out of the sale.

I think most quick opinions are done by the seller.and has no incentive

I paid for a quick opinion once. I got the autograph from a reliable source elsewhere than eBay and just wanted the quick opinion as documentation for resale. The autograph was rare and I figured a PSA/DNA second opinion would be helpful. I've never gotten one as an eBay buyer or bidder, which isn't to day I never would.

Your point is an interesting one and one I never thought about. One thing is, beyond the experts many who are dealers (which may be your specific issue), PSA itself as a company makes its income in authenticating and grading, not dealing or auctioning. So, at the least, the company itself you are sending your money to and who employs the experts makes no money from buying and selling autographs and doesn't have incentive to steal customers' leads.
