California Boxing Mug Book / Fascinating

Well, my snipe would have gotten blown away but I found this to be one of the most fascinating boxing items to pop up on Ebay in a long while.

Anybody else see this wonderful and unique album?

I don't know who won it but is should provide hundreds of hours of entertainment for a researcher.

I saw this book in person at the Antique show in Portland Last Summer. The seller had it prominantly displayed and had a HUGE price on it of like 10K or something (my price is wrong I am sure, but it was so high that I did not even bother to look through it because no matter how much I liked it I would never have bought it).

Yeah, 10K seems highly optimistic. I thought it drew a pretty strong price for what it actually sold for IMO.

If more boxers had been positively identified in the paperwork I think it would have been more valuable. I asked the seller how many were identified and he said about 40%, but judging from the sheets he scanned I think it was closer to 30% or even less.

Still, an amazing piece from a historical perspective.

That was interesting

I had a nominal snipe in there too but did not expect to get it. Had there been actual IDs with some known names, perhaps the item would have done better. As it is, ITE, over $3,000 is pretty strong on Ebay.

Definitely an eclectic grouping. He wasn't mentioned by name but I noticed a wonderful mug shot of Jack Blackburn complete with facial scar in the bunch.

I would have loved to have a chance to scan all the mug shots for my files. :(
