T206: A question of pronunciation...

Though I always just refer to them as "Sweet Cap" backs, what is the real way to pronounce "Caporal?"

CAP-or-al

or

Ka-POUR-al

tiger8mush 07-12-2010 09:18 AM

i seem to recall Mr. Sloate saying that it was pronounced "cap-rel", with emphasis on the first syllabel. but thats just going on memory, which usually isn't very good for me :)

barrysloate 07-12-2010 10:34 AM

It was my assumption that the first syllable is stressed, but it's only an educated guess.

I thought, and was pretty sure, it was Sweet CAP o ral.

T206Collector 07-12-2010 11:53 AM

I've always said...

Sweet ka-pour-al, with a light emphasis in the middle.

I also say "goo-dey" not "gow-dey"

I believe the answer is included in the streetball scene towards the beginning of The Pride of the Yankees. One of the kids mentions having some "Sweet CAP-oral" cards.

Oh, and as for Goudey, everything I've seen and heard indicates it's pronounced "GOW-dee", as in Curt Gowdy.

The family members of the people who ran it also referred to it as "gow-dey," which is why I no longer call it "goo-dey" like I did for 20+ years.

I knew a guy who smoked these his whole life and that is how he said it too.

Cheers,

Pied-mont or Peed-mont?

pete zouras 07-13-2010 07:32 AM

Peed-mont.

Uhz-it, Ooze-it, or Use-it?

barrysloate 07-13-2010 09:34 AM

Use-it.

As in "we have great tobacco, please use it."

Fah-TEE-ma or FAT-uh-ma?

barrysloate 07-13-2010 01:06 PM

That's a tough one Bob. In church I think you would say FAT-uh-ma, but for the baseball card I would go with Fa-TEE-mah.
