I've spent the last couple of days cleaning my desktop of backlogged material for my blog (link below) and SCD column.

I've got new postings set to run every other day from yesterday (1955-style Rocky Bleier) through Oct. 17.

The schedule is:

Monday: 1960 Topps "proofs or variations?"

Wednesday: 1961 Topps Jim Golden error

Friday: Mystery 1956 Remar Baking Oaks player

Sunday: Bill Veeck playing w/ baseball cards.

1960 Proofs/Variations
 

Darn Bob. All that time I spent looking for Marv's proof. :)

Good info. I had not realized these three cards were not blank banks. They would seem to be variations, but if there are 5 or less, and they are variations, that sure means they stopped the presses almost immediately. Strange.

It will be interesting to see if a little more publicity turns up any "new" examples of the three 1960 variations/proofs. It's hard for me to believe they were ever actually inserted into wax packs or we'd have seen more of them in the marketplace in the last half-century.

I think these were offered in a Mastro auction about '97, but haven't seen any since. During that time there have been at least 2 each (and possibly a 3rd set) of Stanky/Konstanty/Roberts, a half dozen or so '60 Fleer #80's, a lot of '60 Leaf big heads, and plenty of other regular issue variations (Herrer, Maris Proof, Bakep, etc)
Are the '60 Topps "proofs" the toughest regular issue variation?

Although I had never thought of them as variations before it is hard for me to think of a tougher one in the regular issues Anthony.

They are right up there with Bob's 2nd non regular listing for that 62 Topp Sievers stamp ;)

Golden 298 error card
 

Bob---I think this error/misprint is more striking than the 57 Bakep. The Thomas and Herrer are more interesting because they involve the card front. Back errors are harder to look for so it will be interesting to see if more exposure about the Golden results in more finds. The Thomas, Bakep and Herrer, although not common, are not hard to find it you have the resources. If the Golden error turns out to exist on a broader basis I think you should at least give it more thought. But, you know me....:)

rumierez had me search the national this year for another
there were none to be found...dont think it will catch on unless more are found,,,the herrera and bakep caught on probably because there were enough out there to make them interesting
the black star 52 campos population keeps increasing also,and thats a new discovery and that one has caught on, if ther had been just a couple i doubt anyone would care...so time will tell

Larry---the Campos black star is easier to find that the front variation of that card with the upper left missing front border. It was mentioned in an SCD article this year.

I agree that unless the Golden error population is greater than 3 it is a non starter
