I don't think anyone else has posted a link to this article yet.

It doesn't surprise me that Bud knows little about baseball history. I'm reminded of a line in "The Natural" ... "Did you ever play ball Max?"

I read that article when it came out and of course was appalled. How can the commissioner of baseball take such a stupid position?

How can the commissioner of baseball end the All-Star game in a tie?

"Cartwright? Chadwick? Huh? Who? Wadsworth? I'll form an exploratory committee that will meet once every never and get back to you on that."

I know Ben, this is not an enlightened man.

I thought that Alexander Costanza was the game's founding father.

Cartwright?!?!

It's widely known that the original Apollo astronauts were sharply divided on the question of the earth being round or flat.

Bettman in my eye. Selig at least does what he wants, self-serving or misguided though he may be, and may come across like your dottering elderly uncle. Bettman comes across as a spineless weasel -- someone who kow-tows (sp?) to whichever owner or marketing poll he's heard from last. Selig has left him imprint on the game, for better or worse, while I can't think of much of anything that I can ascribe to Bettman. Baseball flourished after its lockout, perhaps due to the increased hitting, power, HRs, etc. due to the steroid era (and I'll venture that perhaps Selig deliberately remained in ignorance in order to save the sport), while hockey still hasn't recovered to its pre-lockout popularity among the non-diehard audience (no national TV deal since, plus one can argue that hockey had such a great opportunity for growth at the time of its lockout). If it's the wimpiest commissioner you're looking for, Bettman's your man.

My two cents,

I'll cut him some slack

I'm going to come to the defense of Bud on this one, how many of us would look stupid if everything we said in what we thought would be private correspondence were circulated in front of millions of people? I think he would have responded differently if he knew the letter would have been made public, as we all act differently when we know we are being watched.

Bud should retire, but not for this...
