ca1930 "Base Ball Star" Notebook (cards) .....updated checklist

Hi, can anyone add to the checklist for these ca.1930 "Base Ball Star" notebook covers?
The images are sometimes cut from these and are "card like" :)

Before this week I had only see 2 of them before ......a complete Gehrig notebook, and a Ruth cut "card" (image part only)

This week there was 6 more listed on eBay... updated 15 known now (14 dif players)
all tri-color unless noted

1. James Bottomley
2. Mickey Cochrane
3. Lew Fonseca
4. Jimmie Foxx
5. Lou Gehrig (red background)
6. Lefty Grove
7a. Rogers Hornsby
7b. Rogers Hornsby (dif. pose, red background)
8. Bob O'Farrell (red background)
9. Mel Ott
10. Charley Root
11. Babe Ruth
12. Luke Sewell
13. Al Simmons
14. Hack Wilson

Anyone have others from this series??

And did anyone here snipe the Bottomley and Hornsby? I'm hoping they ended up "in the family."

yes

Does that mean it was you? I had a hunch it might have been. These beauties are the kind of thing that you seem to appreciate. Glad you got em. Sorry me and Frank made you pay though.:)

If you don't mind me asking, did you BIN the back to back one as well?

Very cool pieces, I had only seen the 1910's era notebooks before.

yes and yes

Yes and yes....no worries on bidding wars. It's part of the hobby :). I think I got a total of 4 of them and missed 2-3 BIN's......neat looking items...

Cool. Then all six of the "new" ones are accounted for.

I am interested to see if there is any response to Frank's question. I'd think there'd have to be a few other "red" top ones out there at least. Even if the Ruth and Gerhig are red tops, for symmetry's sake there ought to be two others at a minimum.

notebook

I have a Foxx in this series.

abothebear 05-26-2011 01:10 PM

What is the color scheme on the Foxx? Red or Green on top?

abothebear 05-26-2011 06:03 PM

two more (and maybe minus one)

Hey Frank,

I found a Legendary Auction listing from last November that had a large collection of a variety of covers. There are two in the photos of this variety, Charley Root and Me Ott (both with the original bottom included). It also has the all red bordered Gehrig you mentioned.

Perhaps Legendary would have photos of the full lot (only 10 of the 38 are pictured). Or maybe the winner is around here and can chime in.

Foxx notebook

The Foxx is green on top.

Cool, thanks for the new info :)

I knew the Gehrig was all red, or I was losing my mind as I saw it only a few years ago. Like you said others in the lot might be from same series, ie Simmons, Sisler, etc.

from the Legendary lot

From the Legendary lot a very nice lurker, board member sent this...

" additions to the known list.
“three color” borders – Simmons, Foxx, Ott, H.Wilson, Root
Only red color borders – Hornsby – as a Cardinal – I believe that he is a Cub on the three color; definitely a different pose; O’Farrell."

thanks again to the lurker !!

Thanks, lurker!
I had an e-mail in to Legendary but wasn't expecting an answer.
