Been looking for an upgrade of my Gehringer R318 Premium for a while - happy to land this one from Lew:

Lot of PSA 5-5.5 T206s

I was very happy to walk away with this lot, which ended right at 11:30 so I even got a good night's sleep. I figured the lot would sell a bit higher because of Donlin, Schulte and Ames -- but I'll take it!

Killer Matt!
When I saw it I figured you would be in play.
Congrats!

Pick up this '52 Topps Pafko for a decent price.

Runscott 04-06-2012 09:06 AM

Most everything I was interested in went way high, especially the T206's I had my eyes on. Some of the prices were just crazy.

I really liked this cabinet from Verkman's auction:

I was going to bid on the 1952 Pafko PSA 5, as I saw it went cheaper than VCP average - however I didn't like the card. It looked pretty overgraded to me. I hope it looks better in person than how it looked in the scan.

When I went to bed (around 11) I was high bidder on 2, but woke up this morning to only winning this one..:)

I tried but couldn't hang w/the big dogs on the OldJudge.com lot of 56 T210-7s :(

Runscott 04-06-2012 01:36 PM

Rob, I couldn't hang with the big boys on ANY of the Lipset lots I wanted.

Just because I can't resist participating in Lew's auctions, I put a bid in on the '33 Goudey set, thinking it was way low, and woke up as the winner. That was kind of stunning. So I know I tied the record for starting and completing that set.

That was such a great book. I've lost my copy. Now that I've been reminded, I guess I'm going to have to get another one.

I won this lot of six T210s in the H&S Auction solely to obtain the Series 1 card of "Oyster Joe" Martina, whose only year in the majors was 1924 with the World Series champs Washington Senators. I was thrilled to learn of this card because prior to this, I thought Martina's only bb card was the 1924 Diaz Cigs Cuban card, which I have never seen but would love to also have (hint!).

I was fortunate enough to win the H&S 10 card T206 southern leaguer lot. I think I went after most of the T206 lots in H & S and a couple in Lew's, but ended-up on the short end of the hammer. As Runscot mentioned, the T206 lots in Lew's auction received some very strong bids.

Lovely day...

Val,
I've owned a Martina for quite a while now. Just thought he was just another Savannah T210'er. But your post made me look him up:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/mi...d=martin020joh

Unreal minor league career: 21 years, 349 wins - 277 loses - 2.25 era - 5417 innings pitched, and it all started in Sav !!!!!

I also found this about his nick-name (you can't make these things up):

Traded for oysters 1921

According to Texas League archives, after the Dallas minor league team swapped pitcher Joe Martina to New Orleans in 1921 for two barrels of oysters, he was forever known as "Oyster Joe."

I think I have my "favorite" card (for now):

It's tough for me to pass up a lot of 111, even when I have to pay sales tax. At least they are already in hand...
