One reason some dealers disgust me

This card just sold on the 15th of July:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261066112662...84.m1438.l2648

And now it is already up for sale again, only look at what he's asking for it, versus what he paid:

I'm not sure what disgusts me more about this fellow...that he has no qualitative taste in cards, and seriously thinks he can get that price for a miscut card, that he is so greedy that he is making a 400 percent markup on what he paid for it, or that he clearly has little love for the pastime, and is motivated by the pursuit of profit. Did he even stop to enjoy this card? Or is it just a piece of plastic commodity to be rapidly flipped for a return in his investment.

In my opinion, it's fellows like this that represent everything that is wrong with, and threatens this hobby.

He will be enjoying that card for a loooooong time at that price. It may constitute a poorly attempted flip, (the object is to sell it), and I have no quarrel with anyone who flips. Anyone who has sold a card has done it, just in varying timeframes. I am currently flipping cards I bought 2 weeks ago and one that I bought 25 years ago.

What threatens this hobby more is the destruction of historical memorabilia in order to create another intrinsically worthless chase card that will be "flipped" for hundreds.

And I guess I should say I don't have a problem with selling cards or making a profit.

I just think this guy is beyond the pale. Clearly has no idea what he's buying...I was watching that card myself, and ultimately decided I'd rather get a nicely centered PSA 5 or 6, then get a miscut PSA 8. They guy bought the grade not the card, and now he's trying to get the price for a GOOD PSA 8, not the hole filler he currently has.

I mean, did he REALLY think he got a steal at the price he paid for that card? That somehow all the rest of the world missed this rare offering, and he got a steal, and now we pay 4 times the price from him?

He's a damn fool.

He has "Make an Offer". Someone will probably offer 50% and he will accept and do well on this card.

I'm REALLY tempted to offer him the price he paid for the card originally...just to see how he reacts ;)

Agreed.

Well.......

This beats the dealers I see purchasing high eye appeal, 4's 5's and 6's and then cracking the cards out and then listing them as NM or NM-MT. There are a couple very well known dealers doing this on EBAY.

He's a Rube....never gonna get more than 10% more than what HE paid....

SetBuilder 07-26-2012 04:34 PM

He's going with the assumption that someone will offer 50% -- or even 40% -- of the BIN, which is usually what happens. He simply adjusted the price in anticipation.
