Jewel or junk spline bat

I'm executor of my neighbor's estate and have been in the throws of going through the entire house to see what's there so I can figure out how best to proceed as all is to be liquidated including the house. She just died at 81, he passed away 2 years or so ago at 79. Big Ted Williams fans, Penn St, Phillies and Eagles, Orioles and Colts. So far I've found 83 Fleer Ted Williams cards, some cards from the 60s, 70s and 80s (not much), all kinds of mini bats, a 1967 Colts pennant, mugs, clocks and on and on. I saw the post about spline bats and found this bat last week, any idea of age and if its worth anything more than 10 bucks? Thanks in advance, 35" long, no markings. Keith

Keith,

Any spline bat is on the scarce side. Yours appears to be from around the 1890's. The market for spline bats is not that strong as most people don't really recognize them for what they are. As for value, it is hard to say. The 9 spline bats I've obtained over the last 15 years from Ebay auctions were all cheap. I would not let them go, however, for anywhere close to what I paid. The presentation spline in the "Sports Collectibles & Equipment" book is valued at $2500 and is similar to one I have listed.

John
