Another Set Done...1963 Fleer

Not a really big set, but one I have wanted to complete for a long time. When I was a kid I remember meeting an older gentleman at a Seattle Mariners game who sat behind me and my family. I must have been 12 or 13 at the time, and he was impressed I had brought some Mariner cards for signing after the game (circa 1982, not many stud M players, lol). He gave me a 1963 Fleer Tommy Davis and Bob Gibson card to go with my collection. I couldn't wait to get home to see what kind of cards these were in my price guide, as I didn't recognize them at all. They were marked up with ink and hammered, but totally COOL to a 12 year old. When I found out that my 81 and 82 Fleer had grandparents, I was pretty excited and the envy of my buds at school.

Fast forward to present...when I got back into collecting this set completely intrigued me. I set out to put a EX set together. Last week I got my last regular card in Carl Yaz...and wasn't planning on a Checklist until later. Well...got lucky on the bay...and won this -

I know it's only a 3, BUT its unmarked and good enough for me, this is one tough card. I'll be freeing it upon arrival and putting it with the rest. Pretty excited! I LOVE slipping that last card in...and really excited to have such a unique set in my collection...

Contests, one of my favorite postwar sets. I built it in the mid-90s,
one card at a time. Now I have started on a signed set. I'll most
likely never finish that bc of the Clemente.

Congrats!! I built that set in the 80's. Was a fun challenge..I wish I still had it :(

I started it because I had the checklist. The store I worked at bought a collection and that was in there. Figured I may as well tackle the set.

John-- that is a great set. Congratulation on completing it. The set came in packs with a cookie to get around Topps player contracts that gave Topps exclusive rights to market such player likenesses with gum or candy. Unopened packs are still out there and the cookie in the pack is now 50 years old

Congrats John! It seemed like you put that set together pretty quickly. And good deal on that checklist too!

'63F Wrapper

John,

In case you're interested here's what the wrapper looks like. I am still looking for a decent shape box.

I tried to do that set in PSA 8 or better once upon time but gave up when I found out how much the CL was going to set me back.

Al,
Do you have a box?
Jeff

Jeff---no, never got into boxes because they seem to take up so much space to display. But I must admit that everytime I see Anthony's stash I get envious

Looks like Vernon Law on the back of the 63 Fleer wax pack.
