Trivia time

Which ML pitcher has the distinction of having the most strikeouts in a single game? How many strikeouts did he record?

Bonus question:
Which professional baseball pitcher has the record for most strikeouts in a single game at any level (minor leagues included)? How many strikeouts?

Tom Cheney 21

Yes, he struck out 27 in a 9 inning Class D game in 1952.

New question:
Name the three players who hit a HR as both a teenager and a 40 year old in MLB.

39special 09-16-2013 07:08 AM

Is one Griffey JR ?

I know of one for sure Gary Sheffield. I worked with him as a marketing agent for many years and that was something he was proud of.

Steve,
You are correct!
Here is a photo of the only known ticket to Cheney's 21K record setting game in 1962.

I also just picked up a Cheney signed check to add to my collection over the weekend.
Here's a toast to ML baseball's only 21K man!

Tom,
You and Mike are absolutely correct. Neccai struck out 27 batters and no-hit Bristol in the game. What an awesome game!

BTW, here are my Cheney and Neccai signed and inscribed baseballs that I have in my personal collection that make note of both of these games.

Rich Klein 09-16-2013 08:49 AM

Are not the other 2

Tyrus Raymond Cobb and one Rusty Staub

btcarfagno 09-16-2013 08:56 AM

I would have thought maybe Robin Yount. Guess he didn't last to 40?

Yeah, Yount only made it to 38. If you would have asked me I would have thought he was 41 or 42 when he quit playing.

shelly 09-16-2013 09:56 AM

Ok here is a fun one. Who won the NL batting Championship when playing for an American league team.

That is correct.

RichardSimon 09-16-2013 10:47 AM

Ok, here we go with a two parter.
Part One is brutally difficult,,, no googling please,,

1-Who were the players involved the only time a Jewish pitcher faced a Jewish batter (and actually the catcher was also Jewish).

2-Who were the players involved the first time a black pitcher faced a black batter.

barrysloate 09-16-2013 11:28 AM

I knew it was Cobb and Staub too, although I didn't know Sheffield. But Rich got to it before I did.:(

How about a non baseball trivia question: who is the oldest living Oscar winner (no cheating)?

Rich Klein 09-16-2013 01:06 PM

Are you sure there is only one time

Moe Drabowski vs Mike Epstein

Rich Klein 09-16-2013 01:07 PM

And I can check this out

But I think it was in 1949 wth either Bankhead or Newcombe v a member of the NY Giants (Hank Thompson perhaps)

But you are right Drabowsky vs Epstein is the second time it happened.
I was reading it too fast, the page I read said the first Jewish batter vs the first Jewish pitcher with a Jewish catcher.
Sorry, sorry.
