1961 Post Company Issue

I just picked up a near 1961 Post set and all of the Dodger cards that were present were company issues with the perfs along the edge. Can anyone post a scan of a complete sheet as issued by the company?

I am just curious as to how they came. Thanks!

:eek:::drooling:: very sweet!

Any interest in selling your Dodgers, Mike?

No Koufax? Interesting.

Thanks for the scan Cliff! I don't think I have ever seen one before.

Joe- sorry but I am working on the set, still need 46 without all the variations, right now I am just working on a basic set.

Adam- I wondered if someone pulled the Koufax from my group but now I have that answer too!

I don't believe Koufax was in the set at all, which is somewhat understandable, since his pre-1961 numbers were tepid at best. At the time, Dodger fans were probably more perturbed that young stud Frank Howard had been left out, while Gil Hodges was included--he absolutely sucked in 1960 and was old to boot. On the other hand, at least the set has Maury Wills.

I've always really liked that set--that Dodger panel is remarkable.

Nice sheet. I have 40% of the Yankees sheet. One day I would love the whole sheet but storage could be difficult.

Anyone have a list of unlisted variations for the 61 post set like how Roebuck #170 comes with a blue and pink background?

Also, does anyone own the pinwheel display piece described in the SCD catalog? Would love to see one!

ValKehl 07-27-2014 06:03 PM

Joe, here's the link to the pinwheel that sold in Lelands' December 2003 Auction (there may be more recent auctions, but I just happened to have the reference to this one handy):

I would like to have one of these solely because I am a Pete Runnels collector, but I have never been able to bring myself to justify spending the $$ it takes to acquire one.

Thanks Val, yeah, I couldn't pull the trigger on that either, fortunately for me there's no Dodgers on it so I don't even have to wrestle with the decision.

Following up on this thread, I had a few questions from picks I made in Cleveland.

First, why are some cards perforated and is there a value variation? I picked up quite a few of them in Cleveland at the show and they seemed to be the nicer cards I saw. Which is why I bought them.

Second, to echo a question above, does anyone have a list of print variations and info on why they occurred? I know on the FB side there is an extensive thread on the variations in the FB issue based on which cereals they were part of. I am curious because I picked up a pair of Jack Sanfords at the show, one with blue sky and one with a weird sky.

[QUOTE=Exhibitman;1306398]Following up on this thread, I had a few questions from picks I made in Cleveland.

Adam, the reason some cards are perforated is because the "team" sheets that a kid could send away for were all perforated, for easy dis-assembly.

They tend to be cleaner because they did not have to "suffer" the ravages of handling during removal from the case and stocking, customer selection, check-out, intermingling with other items during the trip to its final home, storing, daily morning handling, nourishment, and reading. Finally, when the youngster wanted to cut the cards out himself, he did his dead level best with what fine motor skills he had developed. The natural oils and perhaps a tsch of salty sweat on his hands may have easily transferred to the cards that were "all too happy" to absorb these fluids and body oils off his hands. Finally, since we're discussing 1961, I must not fail to mention the asinine decision by Post to have the cards on the box share borders. What a "brilliant" way to destroy the chances of cutting the cards out nicely. Fortunately, Post must have listened to some irate tots or their doting mamas and changed the design of the box backs with the cards to incorporate a modest border between them to more easily extract the free prizes! :D

P.S. Say Adam, I read your mention of procuring a Morrell Meats Sandy Koufax at this year's National. Would you mind sharing what year of Morrell it was, the condition, and how long you had been hunting for one? ---Brian Powell
