The '71 Nash Blob Variation Train Keeps A-Rollin'...

The traditional 1971 Topps #306, Jim Nash, variation is shown on the left. It features the infamous black blob floating in space. But I found something very interesting recently, and two examples of it are shown to the right. Along with the usual blob structure, in an infinitesimal number of these cards two additional things occur. First, the top of the blob is hit by a prominent horizontal line, and second, the upper right white border has a thick black mark crossing it.

I've highlighted these two anomalies in red on the card to the far right.

Of course, I know to 'regular' collectors this doesn't mean a thing, because they see it as being too insignificant to be anything other than the usual 'blob' variation, but to us crazy variations collectors it's pretty frickin' cool!! Add him to your checklist.

Very cool indeed Darrin. I will have to add that for sure. I love those 71's anyway and remember so vividly getting the rack packs in the grocery stores.

Hey Al, correct me if I'm wrong please but is yours a tougher variant? I just can't seem to remember ever seeing one without the blob at all, lol.

No blob, but a big fish eye :)

Wow Al, that's great. I didn't see that right away. Thanks so much! BTW, I'm very impressed with your knowledge and collection. I have not posted much on here but I sure do love this hobby.

When someone posts an image of the blob being shot down by a cigar-shaped UFO, now that will be impressive.:D

Shoot out

Well I think Darren's scan clearly shows a cigar shaped UFO blob in the process of firing a guided missile

Never heard of this "blob" card, so had to look at my set put together many yrs ago.

This is the card I have -- no hint of a blob or stray black line. Do I have something special?

That's just the regular/common version of the card.

Fred---your card is not common, it is clearly blobless

GoldenAge50s 09-09-2015 05:58 PM

LOL!! I just looked on EBay & there is a ton of both--w/ blob or w/out blob.

The trend of this thread led me to believe that a "blobless" card was very rare!:):):)
