51 Bowman Mantle

I received a very strong offer for my 51 Bowman Mantle, unsolicited, via the Heritage make an offer program. Part of me wants to jump on it. Part of me thinks the much discussed coattail effect from the 52 Topps might finally be happening. Curious for your thoughts on non-52 Mantle's catching the 52 fire-

people are simply getting priced out of the 52 and the 51b is the next logical go to.

not sure what your grade is but here are the earliest and latest sales on a 51b psa 6:

03/10/11 eBay $4,594.00

11/12/15 H&A $10,755.00

if ya don't have to sell...don't.

I helped my sister look for a 53 Bowman for my brother in law for Christmas. In my looking and research I spoke with a few friends who are dealers and their general concensus is that all early 50's Mantle card are caught up in the up swing of the 52 Topps explosion. Last year I purchased a 52 Bowman Mantle to finish my set. I paid a fair price at the time but a year later it has risen to where if I wanted I could probably flip it for a little profit.
My point is I think all five of his main stream cards from 51 through 53 are experiencing a steady climb. The question is how high will they go and will they plateau or drop off but that a discussion for a different thread.

It's already happened and is happening on so many of his cards. From the 53T 8.5 that went for $96,000 to seemingly new highs being set every time a premium looking example in a grade pops up. I agree would keep it unless had to sell.

I showed my Mantle to a guy years ago (20 at least) at a local card show and he said maybe around $1500-$2000 CDN if I was lucky?

Seeing and asking about it's current value, even with the front bottom damage, I have been told likely around $10,000 to $15,000 U.S.

Personally, I never would have sold it back then anyways but today I'm sure glad I didn't need to. :)

That's a sharp looking Mays! Actually, all of those 52's you have look great! !!!!

Take the cards out of the screwdown holders! They can only damage your cards, either through compression or moisture damage.

I read that many threads ago and inquired about new holders, which I have yet to purchase, so it is in progress.

After originally reading about them and the damage they can do, I panicked and got them out of my safety deposit box. Thankfully, 20 yrs ago when I received them, I didn't screw them down too tight as the cards did not stick nor looked damaged.
I did put both cards back in the cubes, and likely screwed them down less than what I originally did, until I get some better holders.
I am not doubting cubes can cause damage, although I have never seen an example here, but these cards have always been stored in a dark place with not a lot of humidity/temperature fluctuations.

Forgot to mention in my original reply that these cubes were placed on their side, not placed flat, so that may have something to do with why my cards weren't stuck or damaged?

I can understand, that laying them flat, and having the weight of the slab pressing down on them over time could cause damage.

If you like the card and don't need the money (or want it for something else) I would keep it, the price of these doesn't seem likely to head down any time soon.

Thanks. This thread genrrated additional offers. I guess the market is quite strong, and should stay that way until prices turn holders into sellers.

Mantle cards are in high demand right now.

Is that a centered, registered 8? It looks like the exact one that haunts me to this day.

If it is, I hereby retire and shall delete this acct and sell off. Someone plz confirm as my eyes are terrible and I can't enlarge the photo. Tx.

Picked one up years ago just to complete my set. Surface scuffed, but the price at that time was too tempting to pass on...probably about ten times as much now.

Hi guys, and I genuinely do appreciate the love :D.

I haven't made a video in years. So long that I bought a house and now have a proper man cave :). Oh ya, I also bought a few new cards along the way.

Anyway, I am verrry close to making a new video of my man cave. Hearing you guys talk about my videos and collection really gives me the bug... Thanks again - like you I love this hobby and nothing gives me more pleasure than hearing praise from fellow collectors :D

Here's a pic from a few months ago.

I use a penny sleeve and tighten using sanity and I think it works fine. I often cut a decorative mat as well.

I posted a while ago about what is available other than these cubes and was given some good info.
Heading out today to a couple local shops to see if they carry them?

The holder is almost like a slab, but is screwed down with one screw at the top which puts no pressure on the card, it just holds the holder together.
