Opinions on Signed Mantle/Dimaggio/Berra/Mays Ball

4 Attachment(s)
I recently purchased this ball that was listed on eBay. It is supposedly signed by Mickey Mantle, Joe D, Yogi B, and W. Mays. The seller said he went to several signing events back in the late 80's and early 90's and got this ball signed at an event in the Bay area of California where all 4 guys were present. I attached several photos of the ball here. I have already sent in a QuickOpinion of the listing to PSA/DNA to see what they think. I purchased it through PayPal exclusively outside of eBay so I believe I have their buyer protection. In the event that this is fake, I should be able to get my money back.

Thus, my question is: REAL or FORGERY?

Why did you buy it then ask? Why wouldn't you do the research to see if it's authentic before you buy it?

Cruise1659 08-06-2016 05:19 PM

Rookie mistake. Then again, I felt comfortable knowing that I have buyer protection from PayPal. I also spoke to the seller on the phone about it and felt semi-comfortable so I took a shot in the dark.

The "D" in DiMaggio looks to be slowly drawn...

The dot above the a in Mantle is interesting.

thetruthisoutthere 08-06-2016 05:53 PM

You paid $600.00 for that crap!!!

Unbelievable!!!!

I had that crap on my Watch list to see if it would sell....and it did.

Ebay seller Padrestiempro writes "All were obtained by me personally."

I paid $285 through PayPal off of eBay. I can get my money back if indeed it is fake. Can you give specifics as to why you think it is forgery?

If you purchased it "outside of Ebay" why does the Ebay auction read as "Sold?"

After I purchased it through PayPal, the listing was never taken down. So I went on my brothers eBay account and hit "but it now" to see what the seller would say (I was trying to see if he was BS'ing me). He sent a message to my brothers ebay saying that the item had already sold. Not sure why he left it up and increased the price for that matter...

One concern I have is - he said he obtained the autographs in 1987-88. If you notice, its a Rawlings "bobby brown" ball. If you look it up, those particular balls should have "Haiti" listed under the Rawlings logo if it was in 1987-88. This ball has no logo underneath the rawlings, which indicates it was manufactured after 1993. Seems fishy.

Since you don't know autographs, you should have researched the baseball before you purchased it and not after.....

Cruise1659 08-06-2016 06:14 PM

Seller states that he left the listing up in order to save himself from having to pay a fee for taking it down early.

Cruise1659 08-06-2016 06:16 PM

Point taken. It was a mistake.
Will be interesting to see what PSA/DNA quickopinion says

If it was a "Buy It Now" or "Buy It Now/Best Offer" auction, there is no fee for taking it down early.

thetruthisoutthere 08-06-2016 06:19 PM

It's irrelevant now.

Just get your money back.

gnaz01 08-06-2016 06:21 PM

Yeah, that ^^^

Cruise1659 08-06-2016 06:37 PM

Is it the fact that he stated that he obtained all signatures in person that leads you to believe it is fake? OR are there serious issues with the signatures themselves?

When I opine on autographs, I only consider the autographs....nothing else.

Chris, just curious but do you know whether there are authentic autographs out there with both on the sweet spot? It just seems odd to me that they would share that location, although I know little about autographs.

Chris, that's a very good question, and the truth is, I don't recall ever seeing one.

In this hobby you will hear all kinds of stories. The stories rarely ring true and have no relevance as to the authenticity of the autographs . Also photos of the item being signed and ticket stubs of the signing also don't guarantee authenticity. Even a COA now days doesn't help because they are now being forged . It always comes down to is it good or not - and nothing else .
If you had researched the signatures even a little bit you would have seen how bad they were and how easy it was to tell that this ball is bad .

In other news. Got this Nolan Ryan ball that I'm pretty sure is legit. I'm getting my money back on the other ball.

Thanks Chris! Although I've seen Mantle signing on the lower portion of the sweet spot, it seemed odd to me that anyone would try to share the sweet spot. Appreciate you weighing in.

My opinion, no good.

Ryan ball is 100% legit

shelly 08-07-2016 09:23 AM

Ken Golden can correct me if I am wrong. I think I bought a bunch of Mantle Williams signed on the sweet spot. I was told by Mike Burkas that they where part of there five hundred hr balls that where only signed by the two.

yanksfan09 08-07-2016 02:05 PM

Every signature on the Mantle ball looks like slowly drawn garbage to me.

Cruise1659 08-07-2016 03:41 PM

PSA/DNA QuickOpinion rendered opinion: Likely Not Genuine.

Already filed a Payapal claim. I will get the money back.

Thank you all for your input and valuable advice. Will def take it all to heart in future purchases.

If it passed the quick opinion would you have kept the ball?

Cruise1659 08-07-2016 03:49 PM

NO.
Definitely not. The opinions voiced on here was more than enough for me to throw this garbage ball back at the seller.

Good. Get your money back.

You should send the seller the link to this thread.

these are absolute no doubt forgeries. It is highly unlikely that an authentic ball with Joe D and Mantle on the sweet spot for sell for $285.

The seller, like many on Fake bay are stone cold LIARS PERIOD. he got them in Person Har har hardee harr har...Funny guy that seller. This is a Horrible fake and it's not even questionable:cool: AND a good rule of thumb going forward is that if it looks too good to be true...IT USUALLY IS. Good luck!

7nohitter 08-08-2016 08:44 AM

As son as I saw the ball I knew it was bad....and that's because I've learned what to look for over MANY years and input from Chris and Shelly and others.

I think Chris has mentioned in the past, "it's nothing that can really be explained, you just know the bad ones when you see them."

Ebay seller Padrestiempo Mickey Mantle Forged Baseball

Ebay seller Padrestiempo has re-listed (I'm not surprised at all) his set of Mantle, DiMaggio, Mays and Berra forgeries on a baseball.

Klrdds 08-12-2016 06:32 PM
