Perfect feedback too of course. Ugh. |
This stuff is repulsive and almost all are cuts.
As a long time dealer I know that cuts are almost NEVER offered to me. When you have an extensive inventory most of it is on AP's, index cards, postcards, etc. When someone has 98% of his inventory on cuts that is the ultimate red light. The first big time forger in this business, Ron Dross, had 100% cuts in his inventory until he found the B&W HOF postcards by the thousands in a Cooperstown shop. If ebay gave a damn then this guy would be gone but they could care less. His sales make them money, that is their only concern. |
Rookie here...so apologies for the dumb question. Is that just because cuts are easier to fake and harder to prove inauthentic?

Ebay Seller Oldieworld Lou Gehrig Forged Cut
2 Attachment(s)
Just a typical day on Ebay where the sellers of crap (Ebay seller Oldieworld) flood Ebay with their forgeries.
Look at this garbage Lou Gehrig forgery listed by Ebay seller Oldieword. http://www.ebay.com/itm/282241908374...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Attachment 250305 |

I find these type threads are both fascinating and repulsive. Am I THAT boring that I would NOT rip people off like this? Id rather be really poor, etc, than cheat people. I wouldn't even offer a 50cent Phil Simms book as signed because it didn't look right.
PITIFUL that ebay doesn't care either. As everyone says, if it looks too good, it probably is, and EDUCATE yourself |
What about the autograph itself. I'm trying to educate myself and make sure I know what to look for...I look at it, it seems to generally match scans, and without the contextual "other items" for sale, and such (I agree that Clemente is terrible), if i saw this or the Gehrig at a show I might splurge. How specifically can I tell a fake? Thanks in advance.

Forgers are not stupid, they try to generally match the actual autograph. There are various degrees of skill among forgers. It does take time and a good eye to pick up on this garbage. It is not something that can be easily explained in a few sentences on a forum. |
Cool - are there more extensive articles or blogs you suggest reading, or is it just a matter of time?

I wonder if the New Kids on the Block socks or Mr T. Soap in a rope he also has are authentic or can we assume they are bad forgeries as well?:D
