1860s baseball card from Allentown, PA

5 Attachment(s)
I just got in another 1860s baseball card (previous was an 1864 Andover cdv).

This one is also a carte de visite and shows two players one with a bat and the other with a ball.

Back has the players names and positions: R. Walker, r.f. and R.C. Eccinger 1st b.

Initial online research shows the Allentown Stars were a team in 1866- 67.

Any other information is appreciated on the team or the players.

Thanks in advance.

"All Negatives Preserved" is the 1860's version of "All Rights Reserved".

I've seen that before but can't place it at the moment. Is that photo pealing off the backing on the bottom right corner?

On August 4th, 1867 they played the Athletic team of Philadelphia and lost 58-4. The Athletic club, one of the best teams in the country, had a record of 44-3 that year and included the likes of Al Reach and Dick McBride.

Not really-- it just means that additional prints can be ordered at a later date.

It is typical in cdvs and often you will find a place for the photographer to enter the glass plate negative number.

Let me know if you find information on the image-- where you saw a similar example.

CDVs were often sold by the half dozen or dozen during this era, so I would think that there were a few more originally made. Probably at least two-- one for each of the players.

The albumen print is adhered to the mount fairly well. The mount is a little dinged at the bottom right and other corners.

was the 'stache of the seated player drawn onto the CDV? It looks like it was not part of the original image...or he had a really dark 'stache compared to his hair...

It is added, but most likely from the original period. The standing man has pupil dots that were added as well. Both are very typical with early photography.
