What, exactly, about it looks fake? It looks real to me...

ullmandds 10-31-2017 11:10 AM

ya...dunno...t205's are not my "thing"...it may be real...initially I thought this face looked less defined than a t205 should...but after looking closer the gold border looks good...it is likely real.

At first glance, it looks real to me from the photos - the metallic borders look right to me, and the surface wrinkles look like I would expect.
But the text in the additional information turns me off.

“...the person I got this card from paid a lot of money for it with the understanding it is an original and not a reprint.”

That feels like wiggle-room text to me. “person I got this card from”, “the understanding”. That alone would turn me off on the card even if it looks real.

Also, in the second photo, of the reverse, it looks like something was written on the back under Johnson’s name - maybe the word “Pitcher”? - and then erased. Maybe a bit of Photoshop blur going on there too.

So even if it’s real, it’s probably been written on and erased, hence altered.
I would avoid it.

Good eye! In the first photo, you can still see the "r", so "Pitcher" was likely written and erased.

That got serious in a hurry. Erased or not, it looked like someone was going to get a deal. Was under $200 until the last five seconds. And then it sold for $343.

ronniehatesjazz 10-31-2017 11:49 AM

Thanks guys! I stayed away from it. Couldn't believe it went for as much as it did.

Leon 10-31-2017 12:06 PM

I will be a dissenter and say it looked ok to me. Could there be an erased mark somewhere? Sure. I had a snipe on it just not that high, due to foreseen condition issues. :)

pherbener 10-31-2017 12:10 PM

I think it looks real. Good catch on the erasing on the back. I would've never seen it.

sterlingfox 10-31-2017 12:10 PM

If it wasn't for the writing/erasure/alteration, the realized price would have been in line with a grade of 2, which it could have easily received.

Like Leon, I also had a snipe set on it for quite a bit lower than what it went for.

Baseball Rarities 10-31-2017 12:29 PM

Real.

I have quite a knack for finding card issues but I honestly don't see anything that looks erased.

I would bet money it's authentic, after that you're on your own.

MW1 10-31-2017 02:56 PM

100% authentic

You guys amaze me! You see things that I would never, ever catch. A prime example of why this forum and its members' knowledge are such an invaluable resource.

Bravo!

In the second photo (the first photo of the card’s reverse), it looks like there may have been something written between Johnson’s name at the top of the card, and the card text. This close-up should show it better.

Incidentally, I can’t zoom in that far on that image with clarity when using eBay on a phone, only on a desktop or tablet. Maybe eBay lowers image size/quality when their site is used on a phone.

Econteachert205 10-31-2017 03:27 PM

It's good and over priced.

I see something there now. Thanks for helping point it out

Looks real to me

I owned one (better condition) that I got in the "back in the day" (60s). Stayed raw for decades and only got graded when I sent it to a AH a few years back. So, it can happen.

tschock 11-02-2017 09:08 AM

My reaction was real as well, even before I read through all the responses. That angle photo showing the corner. Hard (though not impossible) to fake that kind of fraying wear.

EvilKing00 11-02-2017 12:23 PM
