Why did this Andre the Giant figure sell for so much?

I admit that my knowledge of action figure values is very limited, but I was just wondering why did this Andre the Giant figure from 1989 sell for $2,722 at auction tonight? With four bidders above $2,500, multiple people obviously knew what they were looking at.

The 1989 Black card series is the last year and most rare figures from the series. This one looks to be in nice shape and the figure in general has been going up and up and up.

I think the Andre documentary helped his collectibles as his 1982 Wrestling All Stars Series A card has been on fire.

There are some die hard figure collectors and if you do a search for this figure even beat up ones go for a decent amount.

Thanks for the answer, David. I knew you would know. :)
