TRIVIA....Name 20 game winners with teams that lost 100+ games in a season ?

There are two pitchers who have achieved this.

Can you name them ?

No. But Steve Carlton went 27-10 for the 59-97 1972 Phillies. Almost half the teams wins. Not one of the two, but close.

I know this one Ted---Ned Garver St louis browns he won 20 games--team lost over 100---I always thought if he pitched for the Yankees, would he be a Hall of Famer---

Irv "Young Cy" Young won 20 games as a rookie for a 100 loss Boston Beaneaters. He also lost 21 and led pitchers in WAR, CG and IP.

20 game winner/team lost 100 games

I believe Steve Carlton (phllles) won 20 or more games in a 100 loss season

Trivia ?

Aw shucks....you guys are too smart. Garver and Young are correct.

Don
I remember after Ned Garver's 20 victories in 1951, the hot talk of the town in New York was that the Yankees
were negotiating a deal to get Garver. I don't recall, though, why it never materialized.

Frank

You're probably thinking about the 1972 season. Steve Carlton won 27 games that year, and the Phillies lost 97 games that season.

Just imagine what Phil Niekro's record could've been in 1979.

The Braves went 66-94

Niekro went 21-20, with a 3.39 ERA

Oh, Nucksie started 44 games that year, and had 23 complete games!

First statistical victim of a players strike?

I definitely thought Carlton was one of the answers! Wasn't aware they didn't quite lose a 100 that year.

Here's another one for everyone: it's surprising to me that only one pitcher in MLB history has won a World Series game in 3 different decades. Can you, without using the Googler, guess who it is?

20 games

Didn't a few guys win 20 and lose 20 in same season ?

Yep. Jim Palmer

Yoda - good guess but Whitey is not the one...

bxb - you nailed it! Jim Palmer won World Series games during the '60's, 70's and '80's for the O's the only pitcher to ever do that!

Trivia ?

Steve Carlton pitched in World Series in the late 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's.

But I'm not sure if he won at least one game in every one of those decades.

Carlton never pitched in a World Series in the 70s. 1967-68 with the Cards, didn't win a game, and 1980, 1983 with the Phils, won 2.

Ford's last season was 1967.

It's in the neighborhood of the original question asked...

Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young for the 2010 Seattle Mariners who lost 101 games - he only won 13 games that year so a far cry from 20.
Would have been nice if they could have fielded a decent team for at least a year or two in his prime, would have been nice to see him play in October.

55koufax 05-01-2020 06:15 PM

Close - no cigar?

Dutch Leonard won 20 for the Senators in '39. They were 66-87.
