Some Gentleman Named 'Lionel Carter' Kept Really Good Care of This Mr Mathewson Card for me, and i fir one am Very Happy that He took This Time to Do So! (:

Exhibitman 05-21-2020 09:34 PM

Normally, this card has a lot going for it--Jack Johnson from a very difficult pre-war E set (E80). What makes this special is the stamping on the card back. I've seen this before--in a museum, when I went to research my book at the Met's Burdick Collection. The stylized "B" and the "Jeff B." indicate that this card was once the possession of none other than the creator of the American Card Catalog, Jefferson Burdick.

Not much, but a couple more Carters.

The Chase is odd since Lionel was known for liking to have nicer condition cards in his collection and this one is so poor. One of the reasons I really like it actually.

Does anyone have one of those SGC labels that says, "Collector's Collection"?

When I got back into this great hobby (circa 1977), I acquired many cards from Frank thru his Mail Auctions. A really great guy,
Frank would include a friendly note (sometimes 2 pages long) with the package of cards I won. These E90-1 cards are from the
Frank Nagy collection which I acquired in the 1990's.

Al of LOTG had a bunch of cards from a noted collector in Oregon
& had them pedigreed. Rudy Strejc had these cards as a kid when they first were released.
Thought that was kinda cool

I remember reading that Lionel, like many collectors even today, had duplicate cards available for trade/sale...undoubtedly the Chase was one of them that stuck with his hoard until they finally all came up for sale.

I have this one, but don't know if he was a noted collector. Is anyone familiar with Rothman?

sbfinley 05-26-2020 05:32 PM

I actually noticed this card recently and have never seen this pedigree before. Does anyone know the backstory to this because it totally flew under my radar.

From what I understand, the Mantle owned cards were found in his office or desk at his NYC restaurant when it closed

Was there an auction featuring these cards or have they just trickled out.

Steven they probably were sold via an auction house
if they trickled out, SGC probably wouldn't have pedigreed them 1 here & 1 there.

I had 2 "Mantle owned" cards at one time

Thanks Jim. I just can't fathom the effort it took these pioneers to build these fantastic collections without the modern aides we have today.
