Montreal Canadiens Great Guy Lafleur Passes away

My all time favourite player Guy Lafleur dies at age 70
one of the greatest goal scorers and NHL ambassadors in history.
Sad day.

A generational talent whose majestic skills single-handedly rescued the NHL from being buried during the "goon" era of the mid '70s. The first player in history to record six straight 50-goal, 100-point seasons and arguably the fastest skater in the game for the better part of a decade -- all while being a four-packs-a-day smoker. As great as he was on the ice, "Le Demon Blond" was even more impressive away from the rink, spearheading drives that raised more than $200 million for everything from cancer research to children's charities. He'll be remembered as the best player on the greatest team in history (1976-77 Habs) ... and as a hero to millions of Canadiens).

I started watching hockey games in 1971, about the time he started in the NHL. As a Ranger fan didn't see a lot of him in those early years during the regular season but enjoyed watching him in the playoffs.

Not only a great player but a great person.

Mike

Recently purchased my first Gretzky rookie and realized I had never read the back of the card before

"Wayne is considered the best prospect to turn professional since Guy Lafleur"

RIP to one of the greats

Alternative to his rookie card. If I recall correctly, the last player not to wear a helmet.

"If I recall correctly, the last player not to wear a helmet"

That was Craig "Hit 'Em from Behind" McTavish (1997), actually, but along with being
one of the greatest forwards of his era, Lafleur did indeed have the best hair in NHL history.

RIP to another childhood legend. Sigh.

I remember when he came back with the Nordiques. I was living in LA at the time and made a trip to a Kings game just to see him streaking down the side again with no helmet. Quite a thrill.

I remember watching him play my CA Seals back in the day as a little kid. I read later that Sam Pollack the lengndary GM of the Les Habs made a trade with the Seals in 1970 sending Ernie Hicke and their 1970 1st round pick for the Seals pick the following year with eye towards getting Guy Lafleur knowing that they would probably suck...lol. He was right.
