Posted By: Julie Vognar
culled entirely from "The Monster," Bill Heitman, 1980.

(p.15): The reason for the extreme scarcity of the Plank card, however is not so well known. (The story that the plate was damaged early in production) and disguarded... with a Plank now known in both the Series
of 150 and the Series of 350...seems doubtful....

(p.22) (Plank IS listed in both the 150 and 350 series, but NOT in the Sweet Caporal 350 series! Neither in the "25" nor the "30" factory designations.)

(p.13): As has already been said, Piedmont may have issued all of the various front designs and Old Mill would have issued the second largest group. None of the other brands come too close, although Sovereign, El Principe De Gales and Sweet Caporal could have issued all except Magie and the four Southern Leagues: South Atlantic, Southern, Texas and Virginia.

(pages are not numbered. I'm calling the front inside page #1. The way I read all this: There are no known Planks in the 350 Sweet Caporal series, factory 30. But there could be. This is all as of 1980.)

Posted By: Julie Vognar
there are NO PLANKS in the Sweet Caporal 350 series, though there are in other 350 series. Of course,
"The Monster" was written in 1980.

So we have a mystery. The card hardly appears phoney.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Hi Julie
While the Monster is an awesome source of info, it is somewhat dated. There have been several Planks with Sweet Cap 350 backs found since the books publication in 1980, including the 3 I've seen. The Joe Doyle Nat'l card variation has also been discovered since then. Hopefully Art& Doug's "New Monster" will update and improve Heitmans great work, if it ever makes it to the printer. Be well Brian

PS I wish this card was MINE!

Posted By: David
I don't know the full story behind this card. But, if it has a Sweet Caporal 350 back, it would appear to either be a fake or a truely ill advised case of rebacking.

Posted By: David
I readily admit that I'm jeolous, Julie. The only other trading card I'd really like to have and hold is the 33 Goudey Lajoie. Of course, there's the T206 Honus Wagner, but that's so pop culture now, it's like Christina Aguillera.
