centennial glove ( Joe Stripp)

Posted By: mark
I collect all things associated with the centennial of baseball and stumbled on this listing. I don't know enough(anything) about gloves but thought someone could give me some guidance. Any advice is appreciated
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250368951826

Posted By: William
Never heard of that maker before, but, I can tell by looking at it that it's a low quality glove. If it fits your collecting interest, go for it. However, the current bid price of $130+ has, in my opinion, already exceeded it's actual value. The late thirties, early forties, gloves will usually run you around $100 for something in clean, low-use condition. A rare or desirable maker/endorsement can obviously bring more. That glove has cloth piping, vinyl webbing, and no seam welting, all signs of a lesser quality offering. Can't tell from the pics if the lining is missing or if it is canvas. Either way, big negative. The Centennial stamping is the most interesting part of the glove. I collect the leather, not the ink, so your collecting interest may raise the value for you. At this point, the bidding hasn't reached a crazy level, just surprising to me considering it's construction. Hope that helps.

Posted By: mark
thanks...seller has a $350 reserve, and since I'm on a short financial lease, I have no plans on picking it up ( FWIW... I really prefer items with the centennial logo)

Posted By: William
Regarding your follow up question to Dan..... It's likely nothing more than a private label stamping done for a hardware or sporting goods store to drum up some centennial driven sales. The glove itself looks a lot like Hutch gloves of the same period.

Posted By: mark
thanks Dan for the offer but without the logo, I will pass. That said, if you have any cool centennial items I would love to see pics. For that matter, if anyone has centennial stuff, not necessarily for sale... I would appreciate seeing it.
