Strip cards

Posted By: Billy
I was wondering what ya'll think about the W series strip cards. They obviously don't have the eye appeal of the T-cards, cracker jack, etc. To me they seem somewhat undervalued considering the extremely low populations available. I got a 1909 W-555 cheif bender PSA 9 (which strip cards are near impossible to find in mint) for like $300. Are the cards indeed scarce, or do people generally not bother to slab them?

Posted By: jamie
many of the w series are hand-cut so a lot of companies will slab them as authenticate but they won't grade them

i personally like them quite a bit- their rougher style has a certain charm and it presents a great opportunity for budget collectors like me to pick up some of the bigger stars

Not close to T card status, but an amusing thing for a cheap collection of period HOFers.

Won what I hope will be a nice strip of 10 W551 boxers in the Clean Sweep auction yesterday.

Posted By: Billy
Would an oversize trim down be the same as trimming? It still has to be the minimum size to get graded (at least we hope). I got that card in the safe box, so I'll post a scan of it soon and you can judge it then Jay. Thanks.

Posted By: jay behrens
strip cards are a bit of a paradox for the slabbers. They won't slab trimmed cards, but individual strip cards have to trimmed from the strip or sheet. If a strip card was originally cut large, there no reason why someone couldn't trim it to the correct size and then have it slabbed. There is no legit reason for the slabbers to kick it back. So individual strip cards are trimmed by definaition, yet they are graded by the slabbers.

I wouldn't be able to tell from a scan if a card wasrecently trimmed or not. Looking at the edges would be your best indicator.

Jay

Wow upside down is Mom. Mom upside down is what dad wants to see.

Posted By: Paul
Some of my favorite cards are strip cards such as W553, W554, W575-2, & W502. However, I have a hard time believing the 554's were hand cut. Also, I think the 1920's was a great decade for baseball. I need an O'Doul W554 to complete that set.
