Posted By: <b>Marc S.</b><p>Jim-<br /><br />Interesting results, although not altogether unsurprising.<br /><br />What would be interesting to look at, I think, would be a comparison of # of SGC-graded examples versus PSA-graded examples for some of the other pre-war sets. I think money dictates PSA for the five sets you mentioned - but it seems like there are a number of other pre-war sets where there seems to be more parity in number of graded examples between PSA and SGC.

The 1940 Play Ball set has 6,981 cards graded--adjusted for size it would make the top 5. That is the next pre-war set I hope to complete in psa 8 or better.

Posted By: <b>steve k</b><p>Those sets in the top four are certainly no surprise. And the t206 set &quot;had to be&quot; #1 for reasons we all know. As Jay has pointed out in other threads, there are some vintage cards rarer, and some actually much rarer than the t206 Wagner, yet the t206 Wagner is to most collectors considered the &quot;holy grail&quot; of card collecting. Perhaps if the story behind the Wagner card would have happened in a much less popular set, this card probably wouldn't have grown to become the most famous baseball card.

Posted By: <b>Misunderestimated</b><p>Although I don't believe it is reflected in their respective pop. reports anymore, SGC started grading oversized cards (both vintage and otherwise) before PSA and for quite some time had a much higher pop # than PSA for T201, T202, Fatimas (both team and individual) as well as Exhibits..<br /><br />Also: wouldn't be that surprised if the pop numbers for Old Judges weren't closer than the other major Vintage (PRE WWII) issues... I feel like I've seen more SGC graded OJs than PSA and I know that there is a lot more activity on SGC Registry for that issue than PSA. Posted By: <b>Judge Dred (Fred)</b><p>The difficulty with OJs is that the grading services will generally get the player's name correct (most of the time) but they usually don't identify the pose. There may be several poses of one player but the pop reports will not accurately reflect which N172 cards have actually been graded. They can indicate how many cards of a player have been graded but they don't provide the correct year (unless it was from 1887), team or pose type (catalog number). Unless they (grading services) get one of those Brit catalogs they'll never have a chance of properly providing accurate data for OJs. Even if they did start following stricter labeling guidelines there would be so many inaccurately labeled OJs out there that the pop reports would always be a bit off.
