new landmark baseball book

Posted By: barrysloate
A new baseball book entitled "Smithsonian Baseball: The World's Finest Private Collections" by Stephen Wong is to be released on September 27. This landmark work is chock full of color and black and white photographs, as well as detailed text, of some of the finest memorabilia any of us will ever have the pleasure to view, from some twenty or so of the best collections in the country. I was fortunate to be a part of the book, having co-authored an article with Corey Shanus on collecting 19th century baseball artifacts. The book opens with Corey's collection, and besides his monumental historical pieces, the Just So Cy Young will be seen publicly for the first time. Each collection in the book has a theme, from games to posters to equipment, autographs, folk art, etc. I haven't seen an advanced copy yet but Corey and I spoke at length today and he raved about it. Stephen Wong worked several years and countless hours to bring this project to fruition, and the result is among the finest books of its kind ever published. You can find it on Amazon right now and in major bookstores next week. It's a must have.

Posted By: Hal Lewis
How many collections of CARDS are in the book?

Or is Corey's chapter the only one about cards, while the others show posters or jerseys or bats or balls or autographs, etc???

Posted By: barrysloate
I know Charlie Merkel's card collection is profiled but my guess is the emphasis is not totally on cards. Penny Marshal, the director and actress, has her collection presented, and I believe she collects folk art. Among the others are Mark Cooper's vintage games, Gary Cypres's posters and advertising pieces, Marshall Fogel's photography, plus sections on autographs, world tours, etc.
I haven't seen it yet so I'm piecing together what Corey told me about it (he got his copy yesterday).
