Color Variations of 1931 W517's...

Posted By: Brad Green

There's another thread that discusses color variations of the 1934-6 Batter-Ups. In that thread, the color variations of the W517's were mentioned. I'd like to see pictures showing the different colors that W517's come in. Have many different colors are there?

I only have two W517's. They are shown below. I believe these are considered blue and brown. I know that red also exists, though I don't have one.

Posted By: identify7
Brad: it is my understanding that a great many different hues exist which could be termed, blue, brown, green, etc. It seems as if a specific number of different colors were not targeted as the tint plans for the set. Colors at the ends (of what, I don't know. the spectrum?, color wheel? something else?) appear less frequently. These colors include yellow, red, black, and perhaps others.

There are about 60 w517 cards listed for auction or in stores on eBay, more are available for viewing on the OBC site. These examples will show some of the color distribution, but are not considered adequate to approximate the frequency that each color is encountered.

Posted By: Adam J. Baxter
You've also got:

1. Team variations (i.e. O'Doul Phila./Brooklyn)

2. Examples with baseball plays listed on the borders ("Strike Out", etc.)

3. W517's Mini's

4. Versions with NO NUMBER appearing on the front. CSA just auctioned a version of Paul Waner with no number. Previously only mini's were seen without numbers.

Posted By: warshawlaw
The numbers are little circles glued to the image. They can fall off. I own the Bill Terry raw image and its number has fallen off. It is on my web site if you are interested in seeing it.
