The Ones That Got Away

Posted By: bruce Dorskind

As the final week of the 2006 card hunting season approaches,
it would be great hearing about those vintage cards
that you bid on, but failed to win...and in retrospect
regret not raising your bid.

It will be particularly interesting to see what cards make it on to
the list of three or more Board members.

In order of importance our top 6 disappointments were:

1. E 93 Griffith PSA 7 E-Bay Auction
2. R 321 Goudey Foxx,Mahaffey etc. PSA 8 Goodwin
3. T 200 NY Giants PSA 7 E-Bay Auction
4. N-29 Ewang PSA 8 Mastro
5. D 359-Rochester/Williams lot Mastro
6. D 304 O Toole PSA 7 E-Bay Auction

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!!

Bruce Dorskind
America's Toughest Want List

Posted By: Tony
I saw where Dave Levin had an e90-2 Honus Wagner SGC 10 for sale, that had a great front, but a little paper loss on the back. I was hoping to purchase it after the holidays once I had some extra cash, but he sold the card about 2 weeks ago. Bummer.

Anyway, anyone else have one of these in a low grade condition, contact me!! Happy Holidays!! Tony

Posted By: S Gross
Actually very happy with what I won in '06, and not too disappointed in what I lost. Sniping all the way, I've won cards for less than half (even less than 1/3) my set snipe. And the snipes I lost were so far off, I get a good chuckle ....

On the other hand, last week Rutgers was a 7 point dog to K.St. and +300 straight up. Didn't place bet then, and today RU is a 7.5 fav and -300 straight. Oh well .............

The Ones That Got Away

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
The only one from this year that I desperately wanted but lost out on was an ebay auction of a Cobb E102 in PSA 5. I was the underbidder of this pop 4 card (only 1 higher in 6). I was aghast as this is, in my view, Cobb's rookie card. Cobb is one of my favorite all-time players (probably top 3-4). Anyway, I offered the winner 2K more than what he won the card for as I wasn't sure one in this grade would come up again anytime soon. The owner of the card turned me down...and about three months later the card in the same grade came up in Mastro's auction. I couldn't believe my good fortune. I won the card and paid $3500 less than what I had offered the previous winner for it. My luck isn't always this good, by the way.

This remains the only card I am missing from the set.
Being sniped on ebay on a gorgeous autographed M116 Sporting Life Joe Wood a few years back and losing by less than a dollar. It remains 1 of the 2 cards I am missing from the set.
The ghosts of Christmas present (this year)- several, but none anywhere near as devastating as the above two.

Posted By: Lee
I still think about occasionally the T206 Red Hindu SGC 20 Tannehill I lost on eBay a month or two ago. I know another Red Hindu T206 will come along in my price range, but the waiting.....is killing me! The card sold for around $250; I had my bid setup and ready to go, but I bid too late (about 2 seconds) and lost it. It was not a total loss, because I got a lenox T206 from the same seller in a later auction.

Happy Holidays,
Lee

Posted By: daryle
Bid on but didn't win the Babe Ruth RC in the June Sothebys Auction...:-(Oh well......although not in the past year, my biggest regret/loss of all time was not buying the T210 Jackson that I located about 7-8 years ago.......probably GD-VGish.....under $10K...kick myself in the butt everytime I get in and out of the shower for that blunder

Posted By: Brett
I bid $250 on a t206 Cobb red port on ebay that was pretty rough and had some paper stuck to the back. I eventually lost it by 1 damn cent. There was a couple seconds left to bid, so I tried to bid one more time but my stupid computer lagged out i guess because the screen was still trying to load !!!

1 stinkin cent...

Posted By: Martin Neal
Add all the auctions that have ended early to the ones that got away. I painfully remember a large group of T206s from the D.C area that were on Ebay back in October. I had talked to the seller a few times on the phone and thought I had made it clear that I was prepared to bid high. Anyway about an hour or so before the end of the auction suddenly it ended early to sell to the highest bidder (about $2000.00 less than my snipe)

Posted By: Tony
The SGC 10 E90-2 Wagner from Dave Levin's store had a price of $4,000. The front is very nice, but the back had about an inch of paper loss towards the middle/bottom of the card.

Posted By: Zach Rice
I was the third underbidder on a lot of 4 E222 AWH Caramel cards along with various T206 cards including Cobb, Johnson, etc. I thought $8,500 was a lock. I was wrong. David Levin won them and still has them on his site. It was nice getting to hold them all at the National, they're beautiful cards.

Posted By: Mike Ernst
It was 32 years worth of remorse ago. A T-206 Wagner, F-G, for $600. My wife encouraged me to buy it, but it was more than a month's salary right after 9 years of college, and I didn't think I'd ever be able to pay back a bank loan to buy it. Needless to say, one now is considerably more than one month's salary!
