1952 Topps Baseball FIND

Posted By: Ryan
OK, here is the story...

I was on vacation visiting my wife's family in Regina, Saskatchewan. We were at her grandmothers house and some of here friends were over to see my daughter. An elder gentleman came over and made a comment about the shirt I was wearing (a 1950's PCL baseball T-Shirt) and asked me if I was a baseball fan. We got talking and I mentioned that I collect baseball cards. He said he collected cards when he was younger and had kept everything in a shoebox. I asked him what years they were from and he said the 40's and 50's. By the time I heard that by heart started to pound with excitement. He lived in the same building as my wife grandmother so he took me down to have a look at them. He brought out the box filled with near perfect 50's & 60's baseball hockey and football about 1000 of them. I told him what they were worth and he said I could take whatever cards I wanted to sell and he would give me a share of the profits as he had no use for them anymore. One card that he would not let me take was a 52' Mantle with looked about EXMT but was OC. I ended up taking about 100 NM/MT 1960 topps baseball, these posted 52's about 200 1954 Blue ribbon CFL cards (book at $100 each), 200 1963 Parkhurst hockey cards, and assortment of 50's & 60's baseball cards all of which I will be listing on ebay.

Ryan

I don't collect the 52 set so I am curious why the cards are deemed to be reprints. If they are or aren't reprints, it should be made clear to a guy who came on this board seemingly innocent enough and was smacked with an allegation of counterfeit cards.
Ryan, if these cards are legit, nice find and congrats...

I remember hearing years ago that 1952 Topps high numbers were distributed in Canada, so if I am correct and that collection originated there, it's not that surprising.

What do these cards look like them would grade to you?

I was hoping that I would sell them and let the buyer cash in on getting them graded.

Posted By: barrysloate
He mentioned in the description of the Dickey that it had a light crease, so it will not grade NR MT, it will grade VG.

If someone consigned this to me I would explain to him the advantages of grading, and if you are only taking a small commission, see if the owner will pick up the costs. Every $10-15 he spends may put an extra $50-100 in his pocket, so it would be money wisely spent and you would still get your share.

A PSA membership costs $99 but you get 5 or 6 cards graded free, and SGC has no membership at all and you can open an account immediately.

Posted By: scott brockelman
The Dickey would not have graded anywhere close to a 7 even without the crease, probably a 5. Cosidering these are mid grade Vg to EX+ the seller will probably do just fine as there are many collectors of 52 Topps that prefer raw just as there are T card collectors who prefer raw.

As an experiment or pure business saavy move you could follow the auctions and buy the underperforming cards, send them in for grading and then resell them.

Posted By: barrysloate
Scott- if you say follow the underperforming cards, buy them, and get them graded, then it follows if they are graded they will sell for more money.

And while many collectors prefer raw 52 Topps, they are likely to pay less than collectors who like graded 52 Topps. I agree not all are worth submitting, but VG to EX high number HOFers are.
