Does the pose of the player influence your buying decision?

Posted By: Hagar Henderson
I mainly just collect cards that happen to catch my eye. I usually don't have specific goals in collecting although I occasionally put together a set (usually modern). However, when it comes to vintage, I just decide on a player that I want to buy a card of. Then I look at pics of their cards and try to find one that's both in my budget and appealing to me. A t-206 Ty Cobb is on my want list now. But I've decided that it has to be one where he's holding a bat. The red background portrait just doesn't do it for me. Ty Cobb needs to be holding a bat . Does anyone else decide which card to buy based on the player's pose in the picture?

Posted By: Chris Counts
I don't own a Cobb, but I did decide recently that if or when I get one, it has to be one with a bat. Just tonight I looked at one where he's wearing a glove and thought, "Nope, it's got to have a bat." I feel the same way about Ruth. For most players, though, I'm happy with a any good action pose ...

Posted By: The real DK
I'm the opposite... Of the 4 t206 Cobb's, the portrait is my favorite. For Ruth, any card of him with a glove pitching in a Red Sox uniform will do.

Posted By: Jason L
but on occasion there have been a few.
For instance, there is a Tommy Leach caramel card that I must get someday, where he is depicted holding the knob end of a bat that is standing on the ground in front of him. I don't collect Leach nor do I collect his team nor caramel cards...but someday, I hope to get that one. - just looks like a tremendously thoughtful pose.

I bought these two cards ENTIRELY because of the poses!
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Posted By: Steve Dawson
I prefer a full-face view of the player, which eliminates cards such as the E93 Bender and even worse, Frank Chance showing his "buttisimus". Also, the card must not show the wrong player (none of the infamous Cy (Irv) Young E98s, etc..., and T3 Baker (Barry)). Finally, I don't want the photo to be so close-up that you can see every zit on the player's face.

Steve

Posted By: peter ullman
The picture on the card is of paramount importance to me in deciding to purchase a card. I am neither a set collector nor a type collector anymore. I no longer buy cards I do not like. Posted By: JimB
Jason,
As Eric said, it is an E93, which is an incredibly good-looking set across the board. The Lajoie w/bat is also one of my all-time favorites. That one in particular is close to my heart because it was one of my first two T206s about twenty-eight years ago.
JimB

Posted By: leon
Absolutely the pose matters to me. Many times I have had groups of cards so got to pick out which one(s)I would keep for my type set. I think I had about 10-15 D310's and besides Weaver (for obvious reasons)it all came down to the pose...I kind of liked this one...
