A few times since, have puzzled over whether, if that dealer also had a 52 Mick in similar condition, if I would have jumped on it had he used the same pricing method. I'd like to hope so, but those were different times.

Neat story....things were very interesting in this hobby in the early 1980's. Also in 1982, I was at a monthly auction run by Alan "Mr Mint" Rosen.
An ExMt 1953 Bowman Mantle card was up for bidding. Rosen started it at $45. Someone raised their hand. Then Rosen said "$46". I raised my
hand....followed by total silence. I looked around the hall and no one else was bidding on this Mantle. I was surprised, and won it for only $46.
So, that event got me started on completing this beautiful 160-card set.
Incidently, a 1952 Topps Mantle (Ex) at that auction went for $500.
