You could always work on the key/rookie cards and then go back and try and complete the sets later with bulk lots of commons. The key cards are generally the ones that would appreciate the most/quickest anyway.
Jeffrey Payne has given you a good idea of the sets that you should probably look at first (depending on your collecting tastes).
