Default Soft Footballs

Is it better to partially deflate a collectable football or can it be safely inflated in most instances? It has been stable, and I would hate to make a possible leak worse, but it would fit better in the display case with a little more air. It is not an antique. There is no definitive answer, just looking from opinions based on experience.
