MWI submitted many cards to PSA in the "early" days and I've never seen a scale where the number "4" was assigned to the condition "Very Good." Even the earliest SMRs list VG as "3." Just look at the first card that was ever graded by PSA -- the T206 Wagner -- it was assigned a grade of NM-MT 8. If one uses that as a starting point and counts backwards, it is obvious that "4" is VG-EX, not VG. Given the relatively low value of the card, I find it doubtful that the image was altered. It is possible, however, that PSA made an error on the label.
