Dear John,
It's entirely possible that the team was simply known as La Crosse. I've
found articles from the newspapers of the time about the organization of the
league, and an account of La Crosse's opening day game against Minneapolis
on April 30, 1887, and in each case, the team is simply referred to as "La
Crosse," or the "La Crosse club," or the "La Crosse nine." (Kennedy, who I
believe is on the card you are referring to, was the opening day pitcher for
La Crosse.) Later sources that cover the history of baseball in La Crosse
also fail to mention any team name. The corporate name of the La Crosse
organization was the La Crosse Baseball Association. The team finished
their one and only season in sixth place out of eight teams with a 45 - 77
record.
