Default Who will be more popular 500 years from now: Babe Ruth or John Lennon?

Posted By: tbob

who recounted the story of an Englishman and an American during WW2 who became upset with each other. The American said, "well, screw the King." The Englishman replied, "oh yeah? Well screw Babe Ruth."
One ascended to his position through birth and heritage. The other was a saloon keeper's son, a dirty faced kid who went to a home for wayward youths, who drank and ate and loved to excess. The American picked as his object of derision, the King, the Englishman picked, not the President but the Bambino. That defines America and tells why Americans will always cherish the Babe, our national treasure. Jackie had courage, Ty had fury, Barry has an attitude, Christy had style, but there will always be only one Babe, the man who saved baseball (not that lunkhead, racist, showboating Landis) after the Black Sox scandal.
George Herman Ruth. Every kid in America still knows his name over 50 years after his death.
