joe brennan In a war between France and England one of the main forces of the army was the archer. Everytime an archer was captured by England, they would cut off his middle finger, thus he was no longer any good as an archer. When the two armies squared of in the field, the French archers would show the English their middle finger. Flaunting them with the finger, hence giving someone the finger. Just my rambling thought on a most interesting thread. Joe
