I tend to believe it's a natural progression towards vintage quality items. First you (at least I did) start collecting the junky shiny stuff, then you find out more about the hobby and start collecting fifties and sixties stuff, then you go pre-war. Right now I'm not willing to pay a premium for high quality pre-war stuff, but of course if somebody offers me a good deal on a PSA 7 T-206 Christy Mathewson Portrait I would still jump on it.
But the way the market is right now people have no reason to offer me a good deal, they could simply consign to one of the auction houses and get 3 times as much as I would pay.
