I have an HP scanner that works really well. It is the 3970, which (of course) isn't made any more. I paid $99 for it at Best Buy about 3 years ago.

I think the current equivalent model is the G3010. It is on sale for $95 ($5 off list). Read about it here:

Here's an example of a scanned slab. I scanned at 2x at 200 dpi (400 dpi at actual size). I lowered the size to post here. The corner is cut out of the enlarged scan.
