anthonypeter, obviously there's no perfect answer to your question...but while i was putting my unfinished set of t206 together this is what i did...
1. set sights on certain cards (mini-sets like hofers, portraits, player variations, etc) and attempted to get those only at as good a price as i could find, even if that meant passing on a deal of a price on a card that wasnt on that list.
2. i went after individual cards that interested me, not necessarily a set. if i found one or two before i found a t206 on my mini-set list, then i bought it.
point is that you may spend a very long time completing your set without going through mastro, edwards, etc...or you can just go to ebay and the b/s/t and pick up every card that you need no matter the price
