I first observed this phenomena back in the late '70s when the 1952 Topps Mantle card was touted as one of the "rarest" post-
war cards. And indeed, you didn't see that many at BB card shows (it's average price back then was $500).
Then in the Summer of 1980 an auction held in the Philadelphia area sold three 52T Mantle cards together for an unprecedented
$10,000. This event was plastered on the front page of the Philly Inquirer and within 6 months of this event, 100's of 52T Mantle
cards were coming out of the woodwork.
