Default S74 Silks

Posted By: Ed Hans

I like the S74 colored silks, especially the gold, pink, red, and orange colors. I would have loved to bid on the lot in REA, but it was out of my price range. They do seem to show up less frequently these days, and when they do, they are usually damaged (frayed, sewn, no back, etc.) Lipset's encyclopedia identifies about two dozen double prints (including Cobb and Mathewson) in the colored series. Other than that, I'm not aware of any subjects being more difficult than the rest.

Andy, I'd love to see an unfolded white silk. I have yet to lay eyes on one. I never knew that the colored silks were also folded when issued. They can frequently be found without folds or creases.

Good luck if you're trying to put a set together. A high grade one would be a sight to behold.
